ok, so I know it's dull, but someone humour me :)

Well, I've finally decided to get myself a cheap, dull car to go along with the Wedge. Trouble is, this NCB lark, all of mine is on the Wedge, 10 years of it. Now Direct Line won't give me any useful discount for a second car and I have zero NCB to put on the dull one.

Now I'm very reluctant to pay £500 on a £1000 Vectra. Has anyone else managed to get a good introductory discount offer from anywhere recently????

cheers
Dave

I'm with AA car insurance for my second car. I get discount for being an AA member and they will match the no claims on your other car. My 350i is insured with Privilege for £350 fully comp (full no claims) and other car (Citroen AX diesel) is insured with AA matched no claims for £200

Otherwise I would have had zero no claims this year to use on the AX.

If you have separate breakdown policies its worth getting AA cover as it does'nt matter how many cars you have, its the driver thats covered!! Plus you get insurance discount for being a member...

Thats certainly your best option and how I run my 2 cars, £260 on 5,000 for my 400.

I haven't tried that option, I'd assumed that a Wedge without any NCB would be costly! I'll try getting a couple of quotes from classic specialists with zero NCB and see how I do......

cheers
Dave

PS Rog - thought NFU mutual was for farmers! will take a look, cheers

Well, it's improving....I'm stuck with Direct Line until next year, as they'll steal over half my premium if I cancel and am only 3months in! So am about to xfer that insurance from the Wedge to the dull car, which by rights should be cheaper and I get some money back! I'm sure that won't be the case though!

Have a couple of quotes in from Classic insurers and down to £400 just using online quote systems. I'm waiting to hear back from some specialists who are actually using a person in the process, so should be cheaper. It's probably about time I did this, as I've now got an MG Midget, which will definitely need classic insurance when it's in one piece again......

Thanks for all your ideas, will let you know how it goes.

cheers
Dave

I agree - it is probably best to transfer Wedge to a clasic car policy and insure the jalopy on normal insurance utilising the NCB accrued. It may just be worth the loss of premium if your insurance company cane you for cancellation.

I have done well using Carole Nash and also Footman James. You should be able to get the Wedge covered for £250 - £300 (maybe even less!) incl breakdown cover and Europe green card cover. Footman James do not do breakdown from home address, but this may apply to particular cars. As far as I know it, as of last year, Carole Nash's insurer prefers for cars to be garaged - though this may have changed recently.

Yes, I'm heading down that route now.

It surprised me, £50 refund for transferring Direct Line insurance to the Vectra! Still waiting on quotes for the Wedge from classic car places....

One draw back to my classic policy is that it doesn't cover me for driving too and from work. Something to watch out for.

My policy at the moment is with Footman James - and it is for unlimited mileage! But this is for SDP.

Dave, Try RH Specialist. They advertise in Classics magazine. About £105 per year for my 280.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. Got all quotes in except one and Footman James are currently leading at £215, though their online quote system omitted the 280! I guess that'll go up a bit as I selected a 200 in the absence of mine in the list!

cheers
Dave

PS Now just got to fix the mystery oil leak on the Vectra, dripping, or rather flowing from somewhere and most of it ending up on the exhaust. The black smoke was most reassuring!

For getting quotes it really is better to talk to someone rather than use an online system. You can negotiate too!

I've spoke to most of them, just getting a bit bored of it so used a couple of half-online systems! Fill in a form then they get back to you, so still involves a human. I'm down to around 1/3 the price I was looking at before, so am very happy with my change of insurance arrangements. In fact in total I should be saving around £450, which is nice, so thanks to all for persuading me to move
