I'm currently planning a trip to Germany this summer, which will include some time on Autobahns. Given the right conditions I'd like to take advantage of the opportunity to run at higher speed but I'm having trouble finding an up to date / current source of information on which sections are unlimited (I appreciate that signage on the ground dictates what is actually in force). Can anyone provide any pointers to where I can find this (if any actually exist) so I can plan my routing accordingly?

I have some flexibility on routing but provisionally I'll be using the A1 south from Koln and the A60, both of which appear to have unlimited sections from what I can tell.

I have previous experience on Autobahns so I am only too aware how readily traffic / roadworks / weather / road layout affects speeds, but I'd like to ensure that if the stars align I can take advantage.

I did this very search a few weeks ago and found the links below. As ever, no idea on currency/accuracy:

Thanks for the links. I saw those previously and although the first link does provide decent maps there's no confirmation of how up to date the maps are. Better than no information though!

Aye, it’s a bit tricky. We’re there in Sep and will be using a section of the A5, it looks derestricted at the moment but on the day, who knows.

Firstly, unlimited stretches are getting fewer and fewer....and the advised speed limit overall is 130kph (square blue sign 130kph)...anything more (even on an unlimited stretch) you can be pulled especially if someone feels you're aggressive...
Second, a lot of local limits are being set (noise reduction, damaged bridges, congestion etc) so BE CAREFUL... and mind the signage!!!
and
DON'T go by internet maps as these are usually out of date!!!

There's plenty of free, derestricted Autobahn, just don't expect to find it during busy times in highly populated areas. So forget anything between Dusseldorf and Stuttgart - Its very busy.

Better bets are A8 to Munich, A2 between Dortmund and Hannover, and A9 between Berlin and Leipzig. Conditions are never guarenteed to be good enough, though summer evenings mid-week, these can get pretty empty.

Goes without saying, that you should make sure that your car, tyres, and brakes are up to it. Don't take risks. And be prepaired for slow moving traffic pulling out from the inside lane in front of you without looking, or indicating - this happens very often.

Not sure where your destination is but in addition to the suggestions the following might apply:
- A98 from Stuttgart towards Lindau - South of Herrenberg are several long unlimited sections where you can top out at over 186mph, if the conditions and car allow
- A96 between Lindau and Munich has some nice unlimited sections, in case there is not too much traffic
- A7 between Hannover and Würzburg has many unlimited sections and some really fun parts, like Kasseler Berge (between Kassel and Fulda), which is a good curvy rollercoaster section and mostly unlimited
- A94 between Munich and Braunau am Inn - a stretch that is largely empty and where you can regularly hit very high speeds, with some of the best quality tarmac in Germany.

Hope that helps!

Thanks all for the help and suggestions. Unfortunately I've had to scrub this trip, but if I manage to reschedule it for a later date I now have some great information to help my routing!

Are your driving skills up to it ?

If you are UK based, are you going to be able to deal with
traffic at some 150 % and more of the UK limit ?

Ok the UK test is one of the easiest in Europe, so that doesn't
prepare you well for traffic in Germany.

More than a few Germans have said to me that the Brits tend to
drive like Americans and children.

The last thing the Germans need is another mostly clueless Brit
trying a Vmax run.

Funny. When I was there with 5000 other squaddies mostly under 25 and mostly with fast cars we'd bought tax free and using tax free fuel we didn't all suddenly enter the scenery despite every single one of us seeing how fast our car would go.

Can't remember a single Autobahn crash in the 4 years I was there.

Some people post some odd stuff on here.
