Hi All,

I'm starting to drive over 30k miles and have been toying with the idea of having a part-time driver 2-3 days per week and getting a luxury MPV type thing to be driven in.

My current work horse is The Range Rover 4.4 SDV8 Vouge SE.

Does anyone have any experience of:

Those Mercedes vans which have the fancy captain chairs in the back, with lots of toys?

Left field options I can think of are :

Toyota Alphard
Nissan Elegrand

So am I missing any other option?

I want to be able to relax, take calls and be driven in luxury and silence. Budget £25-50k.

Any reason why you want a MPV rather than a luxury LWB saloon?

Don't know if they would be classed as captain seats but the Caravelle's have pretty decent seats in the row behind the front seats. My friend has had them in the past and they were super comfortable and also would rotate 180 if needed. We did a lot of Le Mans trips in them years ago (and other places in Europe) and it took some beating as a very roomy and practical vehicle to travel in.

We've just ordered a Mercedes V-class as the family bus, which can be setup with club seating in the back - either six seats, or five with a pop-up table. Not strictly 'Captain' seats as they don't rotate, but can be removed and refitted 180deg reversed.

If it was just two people being chauffer driven then the Lexus LM takes some beating IMHO.

Edit, just noticed the budget, forget the LM.

Lexus LM is the ideal fit though, apart from the budget. Fully reclining captains chairs, 32 inch screen, partitioned from the driver, fold out table for laptops etc.

Your Range Rover sounds like a good option…

LM is shared platform with the 30/40 series Alphard. They’re the default choice for being chauffeured in Asia.

30k would get a nice 30 series Alphard or Vellfire (2015 on) with super comfy business-class style seats and loads of room to stretch out.

May be worth talking to your accountant about leasing something like a EQV instead though.

Thanks for all the advice and options everyone.

The Range Rover is amazing but will need replacing soon, so trying to think of other options.

Either a used L405 LWB Range Rover or a T6.1 Caravelle/ T7 Multivan. The multivan noticeably more refined than the T6 (I’ve had several).

Range Rover will be quieter and more comfortable but multivan will have more space and function (and has armrests on row 2 seats)

Diesel versions of either will do decent MPG as well.

The VWs will also hold their value fairly well even with high mileage.
