On my e39 saloon my garage guy is telling me that my positive battery lead is damaged and that a new BMW one is £400 or so. He also says that this is probably why I’m getting airbag light problems. Does this make sense to anyone?

Yes; there's an SRS sensor on it and if that fails, it causes issues

I'd try and find a 2nd hand one first personally

What issues are you having?

There’s a yellow “clip” which is damaged and my airbag light comes back on even when I’ve turned it off with my diagnostic reader.

Where's the damaged clip?

Have you tried all the usual airbag light remedies, wiring under the seats, seat-occupancy sensors, etc, before you suspect the battery lead?
