I've had a year back on 2 wheels now (after a break of 20 years) and am loving it.

My riding is generally Saturday morning fun in the Peaks or similar and I'm quite sensible with speed and overtakes but don't like to dawdle say at 40 in a 50 like lots of car drivers.

I read on here about dash cams a lot and wondered if its a thing that people are getting prosecuted for speeding, dangerous driving etc etc using the evidence from footage.

Yes it's a thing and yes it does happen.

type in "dash cam footage" on youtube.

watch in horror how many basic errors or run of the mill things are posted by enthusiastic dash cam warriors / wkers hoping to get some dopamine hits from "likes and subscribes".

Its pathetic

Got nicked overtaking a Yaris in my car a few year's back, claimed it was a dangerous overtake, but I couldn't see the footage unless I refused the Awareness course and risked going in front of 3 Yaris-driving Magistrates, so just took it on the chin and paid the £95

I seem to remember a few years ago that someone was unfortunately killed. One of their riding buddies tried to hide the camera/sd card or something and ended up with a custodial sentence.

I ride with one but I'm not riding like a complete moron or REALLY taking the piss with speed.

I never (or at least not very often) do anything that I’d consider dangerous.

However one thing I’ve stopped doing is overtaking on a solid white line even if I can see it’s perfectly safe. It’s a slam dunk if anyone has a dash cam whereas other things can be a matter of interpretation.

I have a dash cam to protect myself. I recently posted a motorcycle accident on here. Without that footage the rider could claim that I was at fault.

I don’t intend reporting anything to police though unless it’s something outrageous.

Seeing as it was mentioned, solid white lines are the only thing that really bother me with dash cams as I don't do anything else stupid.

What's the thoughts on this though? Most of the paint is in this condition all of the way along there and the traffic is always stationary, would you chance it?

Some years ago just off the M1 towards leicester on a dual carriageway, some guy undertook me dangerously, narrowly avoiding me and another car in rush hour, then slammed his brakes on, opened his door, closed his door and sped off.
I sent the footage to the local police online. I heard nothing.
12 months pass and they inform me the driver failed to attend court and received IIRC 9 points and a hefty fine. I'd never bother even downloading footage of someone pulling out late at a roundabout etc, in fact since that one incident I don't think I've even removed it from the car since, it just records on a loop indefinitely for insurance purposes, which touch wood I've not needed.
However I've had a dashcam for so long now, I'm convinced that on the one day I remove it from the car, I'll get into an accident which could've been easily resolved with the dashcam. Sods law and all that.
