Got a 987 Boxster on the way with only one key. Priced this into the deal on the basis of 'it wont be cheap' but I'm interested to know what my options are. Main Dealer only?

I may be happy with a 'service' key that lets me open and drive the car as a spare, if that possible and saves a significant amount of £££.

Most decent independents could programme new key, but you would need to provide V5 or purchase receipt, proof of Id and authority letter to get the code information from Porsche.

I also think it depends whether the car provided is the master or slave key

Is there such a thing on 9x7 cars? Never heard of a master key. I've all 3x keys that came with the cars, 2x standard remote and the wallet one.
