100k checks and proactive maintenance
Discussion
Hello all, against type I am looking to be sensible...
I have a 2012 F31 320d that has just ticked over 98k and I'm considering if some proactive checks and maintenance, outside of general services, would be a good idea to keep it in good nick.
It runs just fine, aside from needing a front wheel bearing, and has had the timing chain changed and new EGR & cooler. So some pain already out of the way!
It spent some time in Scotland so I'm concerned with rust and degredation of suspension componants as much as the engine.
Can anyone suggest a selection of checks/fixes that would be worth doing, especailly if they are specific to the F31 and any known weak points!
Many thanks in advance

It runs just fine, aside from needing a front wheel bearing, and has had the timing belt changed and new EGR & cooler. So some pain already out of the way!

Do you mean timing chain; as they don't use belts?I have a 2012 F31 320d that has just ticked over 98k and I'm considering if some proactive checks and maintenance, outside of general services, would be a good idea to keep it in good nick.

When I bought our F31 325D M Sport touring - first thing I did was get the cooling system overhauled (new stat, water pump, belts and coolant flush/refill) - Febi Bilstein make the parts as you can see where the BMW roundel was before it's been ground off; so get them either from eBay or Autodoc. And use Comma G48 coolant (ready mixed or concentrate with deionised water)
With regards to preventative maintenance on the body; these don't really rust (but they can do)
You could go as far as I did and have a full suspension overhaul carried out (I replaced every part bar 2 rear arms that'd been replaced 6months before we bought the car (OWM BMW items) - but everything else (arms, links, bushes etc) were replaced, plus I fitted Bilstein B4S shocks with Eibach pro-kit springs with all new Sachs top mounts all round; plus all new OEM BMW spring perches, gaskets, bolts etc
As for the body etc; a good wash, remove the wheel arch liners, clean all the crud out and coat with Bilt Hamber Dynax UC would be a good start (this is a clear wax coating that'll protect the arches/suspension from corrosion etc) and then refit the wheel arches - that's that done!
Wire brush and paint the brake calipers (unless you've got the M Performance 370/345 (340/345) Brembo caliper etc
You could also look to replace the brake lines with HEL braided steal lines and do a brake fluid flush / refill too...
I've done all the above because that's how I work but also it's to be our main car until we pay the mortgage off (another 2 years) - so back in Jaqn 2023; I knew then I wanted to future-proof it
Full project here if you're bored with nowt better to do

Thanks Dan, I did mean chain not belt, not sure where that came from! I was lucky eenough to be able to replace this just 6 weeks after purchase as it broke, so great to have the opportunity for future piece of mind....
Useful list, probably more involved than I would go to. If nothing else I do 22k per year, so destroy the value of cars and have to balance what's worth putting into them!
They definately do rust, both front front wings started to bubble around the edges over the winter and there is a little rust on the rear sub frame, shich I believe should be fixable with some grinding, treating and coating. this was what made me wonder if other parts of the suspension may have succumbed!

Sorry to hear re the rust; never seen anb F3X car with rusted wings. The subframe yes; but wire brushing, Bilt Hamber Hydrate and Bilt Hamber Dynax UB will soon have that sorted (exactly what I've done to my E81 130i LE's subframe etc)

Re the wings; are you going to get them sorted or replaced; either way, a good coating of Dynax UC will protect them well afterwards
I'm hoping to source a couple from a breaker or similar, we'll see.
It's a balance as the car probably isn't worth all that much really, which is madness as it drives brilliantly, does over 50mpg and has those major repairs already covered. That's life though I suppose.
Your's looks great btw!
