Single DIN Options
Discussion
I want a new head unit for my Boxster, as it's an early one with manual HVAC controls you can't just move them to the bottom to make room for a double DIN so I'm stuck with a single DIN slot.... and when I say single DIN slot I mean actual single DIN size as any of the single DIN with a larger screen on the front options would encroach on the HVAC controls unfortunately.
I'd love something Android Auto enabled and have looked at fold out screen options but these all seem a bit gash and chintzy and the only one out there with Android Auto is a Pioneer that seems to be about six years old now. The Porsche Classic option is cool but only does Carplay.... plus the screen is smaller than the one on the phone
As such I've been searching for a nice single DIN head unit, these appear to now be rare and the ones that are out there don't seem much cop! Blaupunkt appear to have some reserved looking options with DAB and Bluetooth etc. any other options I should be looking at?

I have a similar requirement. If you can find anything better than the Pioneer SPH-10BT I've already got please let me know!
The Pioneer is okay, but it's a faff when you have to pull the mount out and clip your phone in as it uses the phone's screen. There must be a market for a sombre/restrained looking single DIN with a decent pop-out screen and wireless Android Auto/Carplay? Only stuff I can find is chintzy Chinesium.

Same here, nothing bit Chinesium for as far as the eye could see... So I gave up and ordered a Blaupunkt:

It has DAB, Bluetooth, Hands Free and doesn't look like a teenager high on Red Bull designed it. Whilst plain it should match the 986 dash pretty well and I'll design a phone holder / holder mount to put the phone somewhere sensible in the car.

That's the one I mentioned in my first post, it's a 6 year old design, the DAB and FM Tuner is a seperate hide away box and the styling of it is pretty crass. If it looked refined and was an all in one design (which is totally possible these days because everything else is) it'd already be in the car
Only available in the US unfortunately, I did spot this a few weeks back and try to find a UK source. The reseller in the US won't ship to the UK. I think the FM step is the same in the US so it would work!
Pretty perfect option though and if I could have got one without dicking around with private ebay sellers and USPS it'd be in there

I'm considering just using my phone. I'd love something Android Auto enabled
You do need a separate amp and it needs to be Bluetooth enabled. That's it. If you can't find an amp with Bluetooth then a separate widget would suffice. But I think these options are reasonably common now.
So you just need a sturdy phone [or even tablet] mount with wireless charging maybe and you're good to go. As we age and our eyes deteriorate then I'd prefer a bigger tablet, especially if I'm navigating new territory and need the maps. If I'm out somewhere familiar I don't need the distraction and just want audio. If I'm attending a car show I can pretend I don't have a radio because I'm that much of an enthusiast. You get the idea.
In 5 or 10 years time as your phone improves then so too does your car audio / interface. I'm assuming some clever people have made suitable apps to mimic a car stereo screen if that floats your boat, or will do in the future. Or your phone can just become an Alexi type thing so you control with voice commands and look for visual stuff like maps.
Most people want their phone mounted somewhere anyway so why not Kill all Birds with this one stone.

Ok so you just need to buy a Boxster now. There is a thread on Seloc about this:

The Seloc thread is here if you are a member:

It is a single DIN unit, so fits an S1 Elise. I’ve ordered one but not fitted it yet. If CarPlay works ok then it could be a great solution.
