Driving along, quietly minding my own business, when the car suddenly said, "Toll gate ahead, charge 800 Yen." There wasn't anything remotely like a toll gate and I don't carry Yen. It could have been awkward.

I'm used to the car alerting me my fuel is low and the nearest filling station is somewhere in Japan 6,000 miles away, but it does that visually. This was the first time it had commented out loud. It's a 2012 Merc C200 estate I've had for two years.

I've had two 3rd party units come with mine. One of them just showed the car in Tokyo bay permanently, which I guess was the closest edge of the map.

The other one mate some attempt to guess at where I might be in Japan and would occasionally put a picture up and then babble on about something. In the period I left it in it showed me a peach, the Eiffel tower, Budda and a swastika.

Inexplicably, a voice in my head said, "The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover."

In 2008 we had a very early personal import GT-R35, with the original fitment Japanese sat nav head unit that would randomly blurt out something incomprehensible as and when it felt like it. Attempting to navigate the touch screen would simply enrage the inbuilt Japanese person and would initiate what sounded like a barrage of agitated abuse, so obviously there was a novelty period where whoever was passengering would deliberately provoke it to the point of seemingly incandescent fury.
