Hi all,
I have installed the Porsche Classic steering wheel which is great both visually and in use. The issue is that as it's smaller than the factory 996 wheel, so it is really obscuring the view of the instrument cluster - POV picture below.

I really need to fit sets that are 2/3 inches lower, if not more. My seats are standard 996.2 seats and have quite a bit of wear in them to the extent they are already sitting an inch or more than seats with less wear.

Any suggestions appreciated!

I once read that the Targa seat cushion is a couple of cms thinner than the Coupe.

This isn't a slam dunk as it adds around 10mm to the depth of the spacer combination. Obviously you can still move the wheel in or out using the standard adjustable steering column thing but the extra depth is still there. I found the extra distance between the wheel to the indicator stalk a little annoying because it no longer lands on your fingertips and you have to instead reach for it. Not a big deal but thought worth mentioning.

If you're not married to the whole originality of using 996 seats then I'd be looking at other seat options because you might as well get the car right while you're switching it up.

Your options are 997 / 991 seats or something totally custom or bespoke.

Let me know if you want to discuss seats more before I start rambling on for no reason.

I was thinking of a pair of these - but unsure if they will result in a lower seating position?

Also was thinking of the Recaro's below

I've tried 4 different fixed buckets in mine. Eventually settled on these in my 996 below - bottom 2 pics.

I can categorically state you will definitely be a lot lower but there is one caveat. This has a lot to do with the mounts you use. I've tried 3 different mounts. And all the ones I tried made you sit lower yes. But obviously if you get some random high mount/s it's possible you won't be lower.

So each seat usually has only one set of mounting points. These can be different per seat so different on different seats. So one mount might be fine on one seat and not on another especially if it has only one set of mounting holes for the seat. These do exist. I have a pair.

If you check the first pic hopefully you can see 2 different seats - far one is a pole position. The nearest one was way too high so much so I almost found it impossible to drive. My thighs were welded to the steering wheel - 2nd pic.

These single hole mounts seemed to work OK with the PP but obviously not the others which needed some form of adjustment.

The mounts I have with multiple holes by BBI can be seen. These are not cheap and possibly overkill. You could possibly just drill holes in the mount if you need more options and the holes dont exist.

So just know its more than 50% the mount and then the remaining % the seat.

996 CSR - very nice! Do you have a build thread on it?

Just bought the spacer as a first port of call.

A pair of Recaro Sportster CS's have popped up locally - if they don't suit the 996 they'd fit nicely into my E92 M3 so might try them first.

I've been through all of this the last year and fitted some 997 comfort seats, apparently lower than sports seats. As my 996 seats were heated i made sure i found heated 997 seats and got all of the seat heating working on the 996 switchgear quite easily. I did complicate things by fitting a console delete and had to relocate the switches to the 'Horseshoe'.

I also run a 350mm Momo wheel, with eccentric spacer and i can see all the dials perfectly now, plus im sat on the floor. The driving position, for me, is awesome. I've done a couple of road trips since, one was back in February in Wales, we hit the jackpot with no rain but it was still very cold, the fact i was comfortable and also being gently warmed by the seats was great and even though they are comfort seats, they are supportive enough for 'fast road' type driving.

I've driven a friends 996 gt3 with OE clubsport seats and they were higher than mine for sure, it was quite odd getting into a more supportive seat but being in a worse position. It was fine and only apparent swapping between the two cars, however.

I've had a sit in Mr SlippyDiffs car, which has Cobra Nogaros and their ultralow subframes/ mounts, these are marginally lower still and also more supportive and if i was going buckets that is exactly where i would be going.

I assume the clubsport seats are the same as these -

https://www.corbeau-seats.com/product-page/gt3-996...

Do you think it was more down to the mounts, than the seat itself being higher?

I installed the eccentric spacer, and I am still a good CM too high. These GT3 replacement seats are my preference at the moment.

Apologies, will hijack this a bit - re the momo wheel, while you have all clearly fitted the resistor to stop the airbag light coming on, has anyone had any issues with their MOT tester and the fact the wheel/car should have an airbag?

Thanks!

I’ve had mine for 2 years now, first year i refit the standard wheel after reading all the scare stories on the internet.
This year i just left the momo on, only comments were positive regarding general condition to mileage.

Yes

There was a similar option with just silver alloy or wood

Other carbon bits were available too including the full centre console, handbrake, gearknob, stereo surround, side vents and door bin lids I think

I've Cobra Nogaros like Slippydiff, having removed the OEM sports seats that gave me back ache. I've had mine in for about 6 yrs now.

Seat belt buckle clasp thing looks a teeny tiny bit high but difficult to judge without your powerfully built thighs and - cough cough - midriff in the pic. If you're - or anyone else reading - is interested you can get these on ebay for peanuts and they work fine. Although I've obviously never tested in a collision.
