I don't know if this should go here or the Photography group.

I've got an Action 5i thing. The website makes no sense to me. I'm trying to buy some car mounts.
Just want a way to stick it on the car like every Youtuber does, what do I need to buy?

I use one of these. Sticks well and doesn't flop around which cheaper versions do.

I used it to get most of the in-car footage for this video https://youtu.be/e9EX202ueLQ

There are more expensive options if you want longer arms and bigger suction mounts, but this one is perfectly fine for most uses.

No, it relies on the in-built stabilisation in the camera if you use the Action (or similar camera such as Go-Pro).

I also have the DJI Pocket which has a gimbal built-in - only downside is that it isn't waterproof or as tough as an action camera, but it is smoother.

You can also get a spring-loaded mount which absorbs some of the up and down motion, but isn't full stabilisation. Something like this plus an Osmo Pocket would be ideal, but it's a fair bit more money and more stuff to carry and fit each time you want to use it.

I use Ram mounts. Don’t skimp on cheap stuff from Amazon.

I echo Mr.B above

We use Delkin “Fat Gecko” mounts for our cameras when filming around or in cars.

Al sort of mounts for the lighter end of the camera market. Buy from most places inc Amazon.

Thanks coach, that looks like the thing I need.
I'm still a complete noob with this stuff though, I have one of these:

And I just need something to stick it on the outside of the car, which mount from that website do I need?

TIA

I would just go for a mini or a stealth depending on where you’re mounting. You will also need a cage for the action cam that has the threaded mounting that the Gecko mates to.

The one I linked to in my post above contains all you need - the rubber suction clamp plus the adapter to fit the Action camera to the mount, so no need to buy any external cages. There are some cheaper alternatives that I'd avoid, but Smallrig is a decent make and I didn't have any issues during the 2 week trip I did to the Dolomites and back.

If you want to be extra cautious you could also loop a length of cord through the camera and secure inside the car - I improvised with a USB charging cable secured through the boot when i mounted it on the rear window going up the Stelvio!

Was out filming a review today, so thought I would share my setup with you. These are my 4 Ram Mounts that I use. Two inside the car, two on the outside. I should also confess that one of the external ones came "unstuck" today and I had to go back and retrieve it and the camera! Although it was done to my error - not a flat surface and it was dirty too, so the suction failed. Otherwise these have always served me well.

Thanks everyone.

I bought the SmallRig. I've got a long Euro trip coming up so I'll try it then.
