We have two large skylight in the bedroom suite. These are about 1.5x1m, one is in the dressing area and one in the en-suite. They have been amazing in winter with getting natural light into the bedroom but now things getting brighter by 5am we are looking at potentially putting a blind on the one in the dressing area.

Had a look at various options, including powered pleated blinds, normal roller blinds, even light changing film, but not really sure what to do.

Anyone have past experience with getting blinds fitted to skylights?

I used blackout films with a frame so light couldn’t get through. My experience of skylight is that they’re great until they start waking you up early in the morning but a modest DIY blackout solved that glitch. I didn’t bother with powered but I could easily reach them by hand.

We have Velux skylights and have standard roller blinds (blackout) blinds installed in all of the bedrooms.

They just screw into the existing frames of the skylight. We did use a blind company to measure and fit but being Velux they would be a standard size, looking at them post install it would have been an easy job for me to do but we had them fitted the day we were moving in, so one less thing for me to do on the big move day.

We have the same issue with our Velux windows, but as we like to sleep with the windows open the blinds that fit directly to the window frames are not ideal.
Looking at these.

I'd be tempted to go for light reactive films or even a system similar to on the 777 dreamliner where you can set the darkness of the glass.

I like to go for the modern look, I've got mirror film on my office windows.

Got a picture of what they look like....when I mention DIY to SWMBO it usually means a straight NO smile.

Yeah looking at that, we have electric power source nearby......but cannot see it been cheap as it'll 100% need to be 'bespoke' so totally different price point to my current solution which is a cardboard cut out to fit the space biggrin.

I went for a very cheap DIY option.

Standard roller blinds, but with a pvc u profile screwed into each side wall so that the blind follows the window angle. The bottom plastic weight supplied with the blind just sits in the track (I cut it to extend out past the blind).

I had to add a steel bar into the original plastic weight to counter the friction though.

The blind also rolls backwards so that the chain cord clears the tracks.

It's not a blackout option, more like a standard blind.

Do you have the windows wide open? On our cottage we fitted the velux ones to the frames, just used to have the windows open a couple of inches which wasn't much light

Often more than a couple of inches, the windows face east so it's direct sunlight very early.

Another vote for Velux with the black out blinds. We have 3 and they are superb.
