Replacement stereo R58

Hi all first post so be gentle. Just bought a 2012 mini R58 love the car but the stereo is a fiddly pig to set up and use. Anyone got any advice experience of fitting an aftermarket double DIN unit so we can use apple car play. I know you can buy a fitting kit and facia surround for the double DIN.
Also looking at completely replacing the large central unit which shows speed etc with a digital one prices vary depending on where you shop for them.

I can't answer your question aside of saying that many have done it & there are a few posters on "minitorque" that have threads about doing it.
