Apprenticeship -what college course
Discussion
Hi
My eldest turns 18 next month. He has a bunch of GCSEs and has been working as an apprentice for 20 months in a engineering firm which does servicing and repairs for the retail sector (mostly HVAC and refrigeration). The company has said that at 20 he can do his HVAC and Gas Qualifications.
I'm concerned that even though he is getting great experience he hasn't any qualifications.
We talked about me funding an evening or day release course.
I'm keen for him to get electrics and plumbing as well.
What courses / qualifications does the collective PH recommend?
He has mentioned a Level 3 course - what is that?

If he's on a formal apprenticeship for refrigeration, then he'll likely be following the C&G 6090 programme > https://www.cityandguilds.com/qualifications-and-a...
This can result in a Level II 6187, or level III 6187 > https://www.cityandguilds.com/qualifications-and-a...
Or a 7189 > https://www.cityandguilds.com/qualifications-and-a...
With the 2079 > https://www.cityandguilds.com/qualifications-and-a...
This suite of quals will set him up for a well rewarded career in refrigeration.
If he's smart and ambitious, he'll also work through the electrical and Corgi gas modules.
Resultant F-Gas, GasSafe, and ECS cards will guarantee endless work, and really he should be setting up his own business and employing others, and bringing through apprentices - severe industry shortages.
