Spoiler...

Freddie Slater still doing remarkable stuff, going from last to 1st, without SC or stoppage assistance and it only took him 6 laps. Then romped off into the distance. Took a gamble on slicks in the wet although half the field did that.

Has this been done before in open wheelers?

I must've watch 100,000+ open wheeler races of all classes and I can only think of JB doing this in Canada but that was stoppage and SC assisted.

The closest in F1 that springs to mind is Lewis at Brazil 2021, disqualified from qualifying and winning the race. (Yes it was a Sprint weekend).

I remember Watson winning in Long Beach from something like 22nd in 1983 with Lauda close behind. So many races, so little recollection…

I think it was 23rd on the grid.

Found this: https://www.the-race.com/formula-1/every-last-to-f...

I remember all these races now but all of them required somesort of SC or stoppage (or cheat like crash gate)

Jenson Button in Canada 2011. Absolute classic race.

Whatever the wet race in Canada was years and years ago, Button did it. Stopped about 4-5 times too IIRC.... Pretty sure he was last or almost last and won the race.

A severely disrupted race though. Slater has done it without a single stoppage or interference of any kind apart from the weather.

In 2009, my son competed in the Walter Hayes Trophy in a borrowed 1992 Swift Formula Ford.

The Walter Hayes trophy is an annual end of season Formula Ford Blue Riband Event, held at Silverstone. similar to the Brands based Formula Ford Festival.

He had a terminal engine problem in qually which meant he had to start at the back in the last chance race heat with a spare engine.

Ian won that, leading by the end of lap one. His progress continued throughout the various heats, winning three of them as he progressed. He eventually finished 9th in the final at the end of the day, having overtaken 118 cars.

At the time, I was told it was a world record, but whatever, it was a great days racing!

I used to marshall the startline for Rallycross at Brands in the 80s and early 90s. Last place grid winners were quite common then. Sometimes this would be a quirk of the heat system that would sometimes see a 6R4 or RS200 in last place on a grid of essentially road-spec Novas and Escorts who would end up leading into the first corner and lap the others over a 2.5 lap race! But more often it was just the nature of Rallycross to the point where I and many others often questioned the need for qualifying altogether!
