Third party warranty policy
Discussion
I've got a 5 year old car which is outside of manufacturer warranty. When I last had a service done, I was informally told that the suspension joint had some play in there, it was nothing serious but I was told to keep an eye on it and eventually it will need to be replaced.
If I got third party warranty now, then it would provide cover against this when it eventually fails as well as any other unexpected failures. But my question is, what's stopping me from taking out the policy after something big needs sorting out? The third party warranty company wouldn't know when an issue occurred, so surely I could do that right? I could even wait a week or two after the incident has occurred so it didn't seem like I was getting the policy out just because of the issue.

Very unlikely to cover suspension parts as they wear items, except maybe catastrophic failure of a major component. Most third party warranties aren't worth the paper they're written on. Been burned twice on this. Better off putting money aside for maintenance than wasting it on something that they will always try to wriggle out of.
Ahhh, I see your point.
For exclusions it says: "52. Natural deterioration of parts due to age and/or mileage, condition and usage."
I see why it's a waste of money. The suspension arm needing replacement due to excessive play will just be part of normal wear and tear. Probably likely for most things I guess.

Check the small print but when I took out a WarrantyDirect Policy a few years ago there was a no-claim window (60 days from policy start?) for some items.Chris

What "bullet" have you "dodged"? The suspension component that has some play will be much cheaper to replace than the warranty would cost you!
I came to the forum thinking getting 3rd party warranty was a good idea and would help me with my future suspension issue. Following the advice and guidance from the forums that the 3rd party warranty is not worth it, I realised it was a poor financial decision so I decided against taking out the warranty. That is the bullet I dodged.trueblue4455 said:

The key thing in the list you posted is the phrase “breakdown warranty” - basically the car has to break down for something to be covered. Usually with warranties an item has to catastrophically fail, rather than gradually wear out.Warranty Direct (I don’t think their policies are available to the public now) did cover wear and tear - I had a policy with them for a few years and twice, including when the. car was 10yrs old, they paid for suspension parts. I had full dealer rate cover, and the dealer told me MB’s extended warranty wouldn’t have covered. Manufacturers initial 3yr warranties generally won’t pay for wear and tear.

It only covers failure not wear and tear on these used car warranties.
This is exactly what most disputes are over. No one ever reads the small print and vendors are fully aware of this. The marketing is set so that the dumb can self delude, which is something they desire to do. Like with media content, everyone knows a substantial number of people read the headline not the article. The headline tells stupid people what they want to be told while the article tells the normal people something completely different.
And then you have the legion of punters just wanting to defraud a company and force companies to operate on the basis that everyone is a scumbag trying to steal from them, which isn't very pleasant for all the normal customers who have to initially be treated as a scumbag in the first part of any claim enquiry. You'd be amazed how many people attempt to buy this sort of pseudo insurance product with the intent of committing fraud before wailing endlessly from their hot tub next to a fence about how the lizards are screwing everyone.
Read the small print, it's all there. Run a scam plan past those who do read small print but generally it's smarter to just work on the premise that the folks who sit in the office and are paid good sums are already fully aware of every single scam and act of fraud that the general public love to try on.
Buying a warranty in receipt if knowledge the vendor cannot have is obviously a rather large area that they must protect against so it would be logical to assume the industry has that risk and practice pretty well covered.
