I'm looking for a recommendation on a decent Primitivo at around £10 a bottle - preferably Manduria and around 14.5%. Looking to buy a case to replenish the rack. No issues with a supermarket wine.

I'm down to my last bottle of this - quite nice but come to the conclusion it's not quite worth the price

This is for a day to day decent glugger to go with Pizza and Bolognaise, ..I need to protect my Amarone supplies smile

I really like this

If you are willing to spend a little more I’ve found this online for £16 a bottle a few times. Probably my favourite.

Two robust Italian reds from co-op that are negroamaro, and pair well with hearty dishes:

Although this chianti is extremely versatile and gluggable:

I think primitivo is one of those wines where you need to taste. There's a lot of diversity in styles

From being a pretty rustic but characterful wine, many growers have now gone down the international nondescript jammy wine style route. It's eminently suitable for this style due to the grape characteristics and climate in Puglia.

On top of that a lot of the producers are introducing appassimento (Amarone) techniques which push the sugar, alcohol and concentration even further. These will be prized by people who like that style but not to everyone's taste.

For me, the reference point for Zinfandel/Primitivo are Ridge wines from California. These are field blends of 70ish % Zin and other oddities. They are pricey now but worth it to see what the grape is really capable of. They are immensely powerful but deliver this with complexity and finesse.

I think I’ve found it and only £6.49 in Aldi! This is a real bargain at the price

If you’re in the Aldi wine aisle try also the bread & butter Californian pinot noir. £10 bottle. To me seems v similar to a primitivo but a touch more subtle.

Thanks Reg - where did you get that and what price?

By coincidence I was doing some work for a guy from Puglia last Friday and so naturally I asked him what's best - he mentioned Negroamaro as being 'the one'

ND John, on reduction, but is a 2024, so needs to lay down a while, if you're not too impatient ! > https://ndjohn.co.uk/products/bacca-nera-negroamar...

TBF it's grown on the opposite side of the Adriatic to Puglia. You's expect primitivo to do well there.

Close cousin of primitivo and ticks the same boxes. From Morrisons

Carries it's alcohol rather too lightly for a midweek tipple!

Yes I'm a massive fan of Balkan wines - Serbian, Bosnian, Macedonian, Montenegrin. And Moldovan. Was just adjusting my message to the PH audience of high maintenance company directors who may recoil in horror at such non-Premium terroirs. wink

This has reminded me Morrisons did a quite quaffable Negroamaro in their "The Best" range I used to buy regularly at about £8 a bottle when I worked locally to a Morrisons. I thought I must pop in and get some, but looking on their website it looks like they don't stock it anymore
