Does anyone know of a good route planning site or app which allows the user to plan a route by clicking along roads, rather than adding destination and stops as you have to on Google maps etc?

For those familiar with planning routes for cycling on Garmin Connect, it’s this sort of thing I’m aiming for, but more driving-focused and estimating travel time for the road etc.

Being able to save and export the route to Google Maps, Waze etc would be ideal!

Have a look at Plotaroute, I use it a lot to check routes and find it very good.

My Route App is worth a look - you have to sign up for it, but the free version lets you design and plot your own routes. You need to pay for the turn by turn navigation feature, but if it’s a one-off, you get a two week free trial of the nav feature to make use of.

I use a bit of software called "Tyre" create routes, print route books, export to Garmin or TomTom, and export in multiple different file formats to share with others etc.

Best bit is it's free to use with no restrictions on number of routes...

€9.99 a month subscription though isn't it (or will be shortly).

Still use it myself, to go into my Garmin (tossed the TomTom years ago as the route function was crippled - i.e. 3 points only).

Also do manual routes on paper, which only have key info like destination and then instructions ONLY for when you need to turn off a road, so if there's no instruction you just follow the same road until an instruction tells you otherwise.

We've had some who 'know the area' and have taken their 'shortcut', only to be caught in roadworks or a cycle race / fun run that I'd planned around...of they've now missed a hidden gem of a road that I'd found.

I also use google streetview to 'drive' the route to check for any really dodgy / narrow / unpaved roads, or to see if there's a landmark at my turning point to help in navigation.

I've been using Tyre for almost decades now as it's excellent but is purely (as far as I'm aware) a PC/laptop application. My Route App is also very good and is a spin-off from Tyre when the two developers went their separate ways but is more 'modern' in that it's more phone focussed and much better at route sharing as a result. My Route App runs in both browser and phone app. I'd look at both as they each have their merits.

Sorry, I got an email a couple of weeks ago from PH saying this thread had been deleted, but it has come back from the dead!
