I've got to go on a business visit in the Netherlands that includes test riding a motorcycle over there.

I've not flown anywhere for a while, but I'm aware that hand luggage rules have become much stricter (I'm on EasyJet), and I'm just trying to work out how to transport my crash helmet. Rest of the gear shouldn't be a problem as i can wear it on the plane, but I think they might have a bit of an issue with me wearing the helmet through security and onto the plane...

Anyone had any recent experience?

I have an Arai helmet backpack. Have that as my large carry on. Anything else gets checked in. Never had an issue and neither security or airline (easyJet or BA usually) have queried it.

Year or so ago on BA to Portugal just took it in a helmet carry bag thing no problem. I understand I could have carried hand luggage in addition but didn't test that as ended up checking in all my other gear.

My XXXL helmet (yes I have a massive head) was too big for the carry on luggage checker box, so it had to go in a checked bag. Everything else I just wore and it was fine if a tad warm.

I contacted EasyJet, and the official line is that it has to fit in a bag that complies with their hand luggage restrictions (56 x 45 x 25cm)

As my medium size Shoei is about 28cm wide, it isn't going to fit, so hold luggage it is. Darn it.

Just in case, I also checked my Schuberth and that's too big too.

If it has to fit in the hand luggage frame thing, surely no modern helmet fits?

Which is bizarre, as you should be allowed to carry it on board really, as it can't get bashed around.

Yeah, as far as I can tell helmet has to go in the hold, unless there is some airline with a bigger hand luggage allowance.
It's scuppered my plan to ride to the airport, as I now need to carry a bag to put the helmet in, and I won't be able to fit that on the motorbike.

Don't stress about it. Take a soft bag, put helmet in it. Get on flight.

I've flown to do plenty of trackdays with this bag and never been asked to put my helmet in the hold. Just have this over my shoulder.

Have been to garage and measured the bag with lid in it: 45 x 29 x 32 cm. So over the easyJet limits.

I've flown countless times with my helmet as hand baggage, usually just in a soft helmet cover bag, and I've never been challenged. Of course there's always the first time. I just keep it over my shoulder while I'm queuing/boarding and nobody has ever checked it.

Many many years ago, a guy who used to run a Nurburgring information website (Ben someone) posted something about airlines not being allowed to refuse to allow safety equipment on as hand baggage. I can't remember the exact wording or legislation that he quoted, but maybe worth a search.

Yeah, I will say that I've never been asked to put a rucksack that over my shoulder into the test box. I think they just assume that a rucksack will push in there.

Easyjet have got really stingy. Tried this going skiing for a couple of days in March, they stung us for £40 each for our boots bag (probably similar to a helmet) as it was over the ridiculously tiny bag size measurements they have.

They wouldn't let us wear them, and then they made us put the bag under the seat anyway (even though supposedly it wouldn't fit, hence paying for it!)

Pay in advance and save the hassle - there are staff waiting at the gate with card machines.

We flew to Tenerife and I checked all my gear in a hardshell suitcase, no fuss at all.

You have out X'd me there. I thought I had a hell of a time finding XXL helmets for my massive dome. I came across one going half price at a recent closing sale and bought it for the hell of it. Didn't need it but it's nice to have a spare and that new helmet smell.

As far as taking it on a plane goes, as long as it fits in whatever tiny luggage spaces they provide, I can't see it being a problem.

I went with one of the Budget airlines, whilst many people say they get away with it, some don't

I found there was an option to pay for larger hand luggage, so I did that and wore the rest of the gear

Just returned with Virgin Atlantic, Didn't bat an eye lid with it in an Oxford helmet bag, Carried it on as a 'ladies' handbag, Straight into the overhead locker no concerns

Easyjet may be different.
