As above, I somehow missed 3 appointments over about 18 months. The dentist has told me that the NHS rule is that if you miss 3 then you get kicked off the NHS list and have to go private. First I heard of this!

Has anyone had similar and can you get reinstated somehow?

It's 2 at our place.
Dentists have NHS targets which they must get to avoid clawback of funds that could easily lead to a practice closing or having to go private.
People failing appointments waste time that could be used for the 100s of new patients that ring us each week wanting to be seen at the practice.
There's no other sanction for timewasters, as we're not allowed to levy missed appointment charges.

Good, 1000s can’t get access to a NHS dentist. The least you can do is call them when you can’t make an appointment.

What makes you so special?

Agree. I don't think this thread is going to go well for Frimley hehe

My dental practice are hot on it and you only get 1 missed appointment then you are deleted if you do it again, and they don't care that [nsert family relative] has just died. NHS dentists are rare as rocking horse st these days and should be cherished at all costs.

Did you cancel, if so how long before not attending?

Three strikes and you're out sounds incredibly lenient. I go private and would still feel awful if I missed one. NHS dentist is something worth hanging on to.

My wife didn't go for 2 years and got kicked off this list, luckily a local dentist was taking on NHS but not after she paid £150 for a check up!

Given the desperate shortage of dentists virtually all over the UK I'd have given you only one chance.

Arrogance to the extreme.

It could mean he didn't book check ups when expected.

I lost my NHS dentist when I did the same. I was working away a lot over a period of 2 years. They sent me a couple of reminders, then told me I couldn't have NHS treatment anymore.

I hadn't missed appointments, I simply hadn't made any.

Fortunately a private checkup is about the same as an NHS checkup up at our practice. It was actually cheaper when I had my first one.

Not wishing to join in on a distasteful pile on how do you miss three appointments? My dentist texts you and then calls you 24 hours before your appointment.

I could understand missing one but I'd assume most people would sit there and think wait a minute it's been a while since I went to the dentist I'd better phone them.

Unless you have no awareness of time passing in which case teach me.

Why didn't you phone +24 hours before the appointment and cancel?

Did you not put them in your diary or phone with a reminder?

Didn't the dentist send you an email or text reminder?

That's 3 appointments that could have gone to others who would have attended

Did you get billed for missing the appointment s & did you pay the appointment like a private patient would have to or did you just costs the dentist 3 missed slots that they won't get paid for.

Highly likely you won't get reinstated at that practice

Only exception was during Covid. I didn t go to my dentist for 2.5 years and told them I d only be comfortable going after I was vaccinated. They were totally fine with it. So missed 6 appointments, although told them I wasn’t attending.

In the waiting room of my dentists surgery, I overheard someone in a similar situation to the OP. They told him he can sign on to the waiting list, but would be put at the bottom of it and was advised to try somewhere else if he wanted to be seen in reasonable time. Apparently the average wait was 18 months.

I go to a private dentist, lately because I hadn't gone for years and suddenly needed an emergency appointment.

Whenever I am there the receptionists always seem to be on the phone to someone telling them that they don't take on NHS patients. I can only assume there are thousands of people trying to find an NHS dentist.

So if you missed three appointments and there are clearly thousands of people looking for NHS dentists I have no sympathy I am afraid.

I was 'made aware' of this when I missed an appointment with NHS dentist years ago; stern warning after forgetting an appointment - one more and you're out.

Just so happens they were a pretty poor practice anyway, and I always seemed to get the new face/apprentice every time.

Switched to private and pay for Denplan and receive far better service now.

When I missed my two appointments, they were being booked so far in advance (over a year) that by the time they came around I had completely forgotten I had ever booked an appointment, let alone when it was. I discovered I had been struck off when clearing out my junk emails!

Oh well fairs fair, it's worth the extra £30 to get a checkup within a few weeks.

Seems reasonable to me. My wife used to be a dentists receptionist, people missing appointments or being late deny others appointments and reduce the amount of emergency appointments available.

If I was in charge, one missed appointment with short or no notice would get you removed, if my wife was in charge you would be in the stocks having rotten fruit thrown at you.

My dentist sends me so many reminders by email AND text it would be impossible to miss an appointment
