Ive got an 09 convertible v8 vantage

one of the rear light clusters has failed, it was flickering for a bit, but has now died fully.

I understand an original replacement unit is a) very expensive b) currently not available

I have seen a couple of services online offering to repair them but wondered if anyone had here had any experience of these services ?

Correct; the red ones are now unavailable new and clear ones are about £1K each.

I used the one in Guildford and wouldn't use him again.

In the end I was lucky to find a s/h unit on eBay. So that's probably the best option - expect to pay c.£500 for a working one (as you may know DB9s and Rapides share the same unit so you could use one from those).

I used this chap to repair one of my rear lights last year. £215 all in (although it may have gone up a bit since then). He is based in Norfolk but I just posted the light to him.

AM Performance in Macclesfield (excellent, BTW) exchanged my failing near-side rear last year, fitted, I think £340.

I'm lucky. I repaired two for 350 €. I'm glad I found it in Italy. Shipping to the UK costs me more customs than repair.
