Can I dim an LED light?

I like the look of these lights but they are far too bright for my patio. Would a dimmer work to dim them and if so do I need a special led one? I would need 4 of these on the patio off the one switch if that makes any difference.

Another approach is to look at 12V DC led lamps, some of those are simply dimmable by reducing the voltage.

Some however will quote a wide operating range like 10 to 32V and are not dimmable as they have internal regulation circuits.


Personally, I've found dimmable mains LEDs a wind-up, and have some cheap and very satisfactory 12V LEDs on my boat as well as outdoors.
With isolated low voltage DC you don't have the safety issues of mains outdoors.

I bought some dimmable LEDs for my dining room lights from Screwfix. As the earlier poster says, just check the spec - most are non-dimmable.

Buy one that can take a bulb and then buy a smart one that you can dim.

Easiest way around the problem.

^ Yep. We have smart bulbs in every room. Tapo ones at about £6 each. They work flawlessly and Alexa routines just add to the convenience. Don't think we use light switches at all these days.

Or just buy ones that can take a bulb and fit lower lumen output LED bubs. OP just want them dimmer, not dimmable.
