Advice on tyres, tricky one.....
Discussion
I need to get a new set of rubber for the S1 Sport 160. I am looking at Toyo T1R, Yoko A048, Toyo R888 (anyone tried these?) and the advant neovs LSS ones.
Ok here is the situation. I have had the car a year and a half and still have'nt been on track, so it virtally all going to be on road. I do use the car everyday and probably do around 1000 miles a month, 350 of those miles are to get to work and back, the rest is fun time. Most of this driving is done quickly so lots of grip is needed. I currently have Bridgestone SO3's and they have lasted 13,000 on the rear. How long do the A048 and R888 last in comparison. How do you know when to change them as they dont have tyre wear lines. Does the 1.2mm of tread rule still apply to these tyres? and how bad are they in the wet as winter is nearly here.

they do have wear lines...and last about 4-6k rears, maybe 10K fronts. Id only run A048 or 888 if you track/sprint the car...no point really otherwise as you wont really get the benefit on the road...unless you want to feel the difference between 1.0g and 1.1g cornering on your local roundabout
For everyday use then Id go with Yoko Advan Neovas or the cheaper option T1Rs

I agree with Bogie,
Go for Advans of Proxys, (you'll get more wear out of the proxys)
048 and 888 are really track tyres and you'd be driving like a complete hooligan to unstick them on public roads!
I would also like some super sticky rubber, but like you most of my driving is done on the roads and I needed a tyre that could perform in all conditions. For that reason I went with the T1-R. Its so good in the wet, you still have to drive with care - but at least they can deal with rain which both the 048 and 888 can't.
For me track tyres were just too expensive to use on the roads - The Advan seemed a good compromise, but I got such a good deal on the T1-Rs from Camskill I went with them.
As an allrounder they really are very good - and, with a proper geo, grip like the proverbial S**T to a blanket.
Cheers

My first Elise I had running initially on P0's and then on Advans. The current car is on T1-S's.
P0's were just rubbish and almost bald anyway so no comparison.
The Toyos on the current car I find exhasperating - cannot find a decent psi setting for them and they seem to roll around alot on the sidewalls. They don't appear to be very progressive and I'm looking forward to doing a training day in 3 weeks so I can see how and when they let go... at the moment it's a bit of a lottery which doesn't fill me with confidence.
That said, I have driven the car quite enthusiastically on them and at the front they seem to grip well (wet & dry).
Advan Neova LTS's are far better in all respects. Designed for the Elise I found them to be perfectly balanced at 22F/26R, very progressive, superb in the dry, excellent in the wet. As a road tyre they are excellent. I've been on track in a couple of S1's running Advan Neova LTS's and they appeared to hold out well in cars 2-up and being driven right on the limit around Brands.
I've also heard good things about the Bridgestone's now available (G Force Profilers? IIRC?). A couple of people have them from the Kent Lotus group and are very happy with them as a budget tyre.
Personally my preference is for the Advans - that's the route I'll go down when mine need replacing.

They're BF Goodrich and they're great. I've heard differing reports on Toyos (T1-Rs which are the new version) including them needing up to 2000 miles to bed in properly so got a set of BFGs and I'm very happy with them - just under £300 fitted.
I don't know why people don't recommend using AO48/R888's on the road, the difference in grip is certainly noticable IMHO. Fair enough if you only drive down the motorway everyday as you'll only get 3-4k miles from the S1 sized rears but well worth it for other use.
Also they are no where near as bad as everyone who I suspect hasn't used them say they are in the wet. My A048's are much better in wet weather than my advan neovas are.

I run A048s on the road myself...but for purely road use then wasting them for 4K miles on the rear going around the motorway seems expensive when the avg driver wont notice the difference 99% of the time, and can buy tyres that cost 1/2 as much.
In the wet they are fine...as long as you dont hit any puddles at high speed

Dont mean to be rude, but are you sure the A048 are better in the wet than the advan neova???? I just cant see how this can be as there is less tread to dispell the water. The tyres I get have to last longer than 4K, I just cant afford it at that. Seems like the BFG's or the T1R's could be on hte cards. Just wonder now if the LSS advant neova ones are worth the extra over the others....??
Ps. Help much apprieciated. The amount of time I have come into a roundabout and the current front 185 P-zeros have locked up in the dry !! wasn't even using much braking power... They have to go

Those who have tried most variants on SELOC (some of whom actually know what they're talking about) rate the BFGs about the same as the Yoko Neova LTS, I've never tried the Yokos so can't comment.
If you go for something other than Yokos make sure you get the same size 195/50/R15 and 225/45/R16 IIRC i.e. bigger than std S1 size

I run T1-S's and over here in NZ almost EVERYONE is switching to T1-S or T1-R on their elises... they seem to suit our roads pretty well and are a great all-round tyre. The sidewalls are a little bit wobbly, but this is generally fixed by going up a PSI or 2 on the pressure from others. My car runs circles around Bridgestone-shod S2s on the track whereas it's almost a dead heat between the same cars and drivers when they switch to T1-Rs. Another option noone seems to mention is the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3.... I've never even heard of anyone running these on their Elise, but many people seem to rate them on other cars (me included).
I personally don't rate the toyo's at all in any form. The A048's/R888 definitely have more grip in the wet, the only thing is they are not as good when there are rivers on the roads or driving through deep puddles. But when that's the case you should be taking it easy in an elise irrespective of what tyres it has.

DING - thanks for correcting me, I knew it was on or t'other. Typical me to pick t'other
