Hey everyone,
I have a 2017 G31 BMW 5 series Touring. Had it for 7 years, getting to 80k now and time to replace it. It's barely put a foot wrong (cracked alloys and a lambda sensor) and do all the servicing and maintenance myself. Loved it. Fast and frugal - 45 mpg if you drive sensibly, but fast when you want it. Tow bar on the back for bikes, roof box on the top!

So I'm not sure what to replace it with, any ideas? I'd love an RS6, but can't live with commuting in it and turning up in something so shouty. I like the idea of the new M5 with electric power, but too expensive right now and not sure they do an estate? A Superb is too slow and a bit cheap. I like Diesel, as drive to the Alps with 2 stops and in one go, but petrol would be fine nowadays, given what's happened, but not electric!

Budget - probably up to about £50k really, but ideally £40/45k and about 2/3 years old so I can maintain myself without killing the value.

Any ideas? I don't get car mags anymore, so a bit out of touch.

Thanks guys!
Ian smile

Run the 530d for another 7 years and buy a really sexy motorcycle instead.

I've done that - had three! I might get another one when I've sold the 911....

I don't post often, sorry, I didn't realise I'd be judged or condemned for that - was just looking for your personal views. Sorry if this isn't cool.

No judgement, just seems to be a standard comment when those who rarely post actually do so! smile

Alpina B5 would get my vote if a RS6 is too shouty for you. Not diesel but 800Nm torque and easily do over 30mpg on a run.

Good shout I think - is that G30 or the F10 series? Do they do a touring and can you get a tow bar on it? I remember one model you have to delete the Alpina bumper if you wanted a tow bar?

Even though it'as 8 years old and 80k? What about the face lifts or the newer petrol ones?

Is reliability generally good on these cars, what miles do you think I can expect before suspension knocks and rattles..?

I ran a 2017 G31 5 Series Touring from new for 3 years. Now driving a BMW iX, which is the perfect replacement smile

You can get a 2023 BMW iX50 for £50k, 320+ miles of real world range and 520bhp & 1,376 Nm torque. [Towing capacity up to 2.5 tons]

Back in 2019 I test drove a 530d alongside many other options, SUVs, petrol, diesel and the 530d touring was the absolute stand out as the do it all solution. Ended up in a stupidly cheap salary sacrifice EV eventually but the 530d stays in my thoughts. The introduction of lower capacity, mild hybrids scare me a bit for long term ownership so I’d be inclined to keep it if it’s still suitable and you know it’s history. There will never be another vehicle quite like it.

Yeah I did think this and have been looking at newer 530ds - felt like I must be missing something though and there must be better cars out there by now....?

I do love mine, have to be honest. Just does everything - only thing it doesn't do is carry 7 people. It's been to the Alps and back about 6 times. Only issues with the cars are minorish (the 20" alloys cracking is a bit of a pain) but I carry a spare too so well prepared. Easy to service and maintain too....

I am tempted to just get another....

Interesting - thanks. I wouldn't mind if it had a 400 mile range TBH and petrol is cheaper and if anything more reliable too....? But yeah, thanks for steering me away as I would consider petrol....

Isn't it electric? I can't get past the fact I can get 600 miles in 5 mins at the moment. If I had to stop 3 times to get to the alps and take an hour to charge each time, it wouldn't be great....

You've had no issues? My father in law had to change the rear air suspension at 80k...
