Having been in Wales for the best part of two weeks, I have noticed they are drastically better maintained than English ones. I wonder if less traffic/wear is a factor. But if I'm honest, it's blissful to drive, even with the constant NSL to 20mph. How do they do it differently?

Quieter road do also make for a much nicer driving experience even when not hooning. (Can't really hoon a van).

You clearly didn't visit Denbighshire - they're dreadful here. We find (like most things in Wales) that West is Best!

Less roads, less people using them easier to maintain.

However I suggest you got lucky and didn’t drive enough. The ones I cycle on are shockingly bad.

We predominantly were in West Wales, then hacked over towards, Brecon. Then back down south.

Wales (and some parts of the south east) qualified for EU funding for infrastructure. I think the A40 got a big grant.
Plus there seem to be fewer cables/drains etc buried in them, and generally less traffic. Particularly HGVs.

Yes they are better maintained. I moved here (Gwynedd) in 2015, and the roads are noticeably better than the South East of England. Once you live here, you see the regular road maintenance before the tourist season. One reason I have kept my runflats - smoother roads.
