987.2 - S - Manual rarity?
Discussion
I’m looking for a 987.2 Manual Cayman S. There literally isn’t a decent one for sale.
Pistonheads has almost always been my go-to for the multitude of cars I’ve purchased; yet there literally isn’t a decent one that hits the 987.2 / Manual / S, criteria.
That’s before I even contemplate desirable options.
Whilst I won’t mention rival for sale & auction sites here, the story is the same across the board.
Additionally my other go-to has always been forums but again it’s the same story.
Are these exceptionally rare (for a relatively mainstream car) or is nobody selling them?

That one was listed today and is the only one that seems to be a tidy car. That being said, I thought it was a bit overpriced but when any others seem a little ropey…?https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202506053...

They aren't many about generally, sales were low in period, and there are very, very (very!) few with good spec. I've bought a couple in recent years and have been watching the market fairly closely since 2020. In that time, probably three really nice examples with properly good spec have come up.
The first one I bought was a really nice example with OK spec, I gave up waiting for the perfect car. My current one is very, very good spec, have only seen one or two others as good, but not the absolute best example condition wise. Again, after six months I lost patience!
The one linked above at Motorhouse Shipley appears to be pretty exceptional. Very few like that pop up (assuming it's as it appears, have not seen the car, but it's very low miles and looks in good order).
Spec of that car is good, but not stellar - it has extended leather, BOSE, xenons, heated memory seats, Chrono. Most notably, it doesn't have PASM, PSE or sports seats for sure, may or may not have the diff. If it's meant to be a forever car and you like the colour, I'd still jump on it even at the price. It's a bit too high, that place is always very expensive, but you could be waiting years for another as good (again, assuming it's as good as it looks it should be). If you're keeping short term, you're probably baking in a fair loss, so maybe compromise on spec.
Spec is the real problem, so few with good spec. It's actually easier to find a good Cayman R. If you're keeping short term, I'd suggest buying a good spec R would be a better bet. More initial outlay, but easier to find a good one, there are probably at least five really nice Rs for sale per year, probably more, and it should hold its money well and total cost of ownership will be similar or actually less than the S.
Good luck!

Low-to-no spec, aftermarket exhaust. Air fresher hanging from the rear-view mirror is a pretty major turn off, but it's a low spec car, that would be the main issue.
Could be OK if you don't care at all about the spec, but OP has indicated that's on the radar.
Agreed. The market speaks, it's been on the market 8 months. Unpopular colour, dull wheel spec/style and choice of wheel colour, little kerb appeal, base seats, base steering wheel. Hopeless images. Little wonder it hasn't sold.Could be OK if you don't care at all about the spec, but OP has indicated that's on the radar.

Poor spec, John Major interior and the Halfords number-plate is a give away.cayster said:
You certainly seem to have a good eye on the market. If you see or hear of anything coming up for sale, by all means drop something in here haha.
I think you're right in your assessment and whilst the motorhouse one is overpriced, I'd be tempted to pay it as I do plan to keep the car for a considerable length of time.
It would need to be near perfect to pay over the odds though and whilst it's exceptionally clean looking, I'm not wowed by the colour and some of the spec missing.
It's easier to look past colour etc if it's well priced.
I think the motorhouse one is a pretty good buy if you value ultra low miles but personally, I care not. 80k and an owner who's cherished it, is far more my bag. I intend to put miles on it anyway.

What s wrong with this one:
I think Cayster has hit the nail on the head, but in essence it's been for sale for a long time, is low spec (has the worst grey interior) and there are just a few tell-tales that it might not be cherished by some of the fastidious owners that frequent places like this. Thank you all the same. I do like the blue but that's about it's only saving grace.
Unfortunately, as it's been mentioned, there are a couple for sale but they look unloved or are poorly specced.
I'd rather have a 150k mile car with PSE, PSM, Chrono and LSD than a 30k miles car with none of the above.

If I mentioned this to anybody at work/home, they'd think I'd lost the plot. I also wouldn't be able to articulate why, but this is so true. Jones the cat said:

Haha this isn't wrong either.OP I wouldn't be put off by the one at Shipley - looks like a great example.
Most 987 owners put the carnewal exhaust on their car anyway so not having PSE is no biggie
It's low miles & low owners. Might be worth a look. The others are probably priced higher on account of them being manual & there not being many of them.
I suspect most people now will be keen to just get into whatever car is about for the summer

Thanks, I haven't completely discounted it by any means and the budget can stretch that far but I feel I want something a little closer to my ideal spec if I'm to spend the upper region of my budget. Most 987 owners put the carnewal exhaust on their car anyway so not having PSE is no biggie

I may be chasing a unicorn but I feel like it should be somewhat achievable
The carnewal does seem to be popular and the feedback fairly consistent which is odd for an aftermarket modification

Agreed...the Carnewal exhaust is a great mod, if you are happy spannering its easy once you get the rotted studs out, after having a chat with Gert at Carenwal I went a stage further with mine and bought the already modded Cayman R system, it wasn't cheap but sounds lovely.I may be chasing a unicorn but I feel like it should be somewhat achievable

The 987.2 CS are great cars I love mine to bits, I've had it fourteen years and its just recently clicked over to 21,000 miles, good luck with your search...oh and don't be put off with the stock dash its perfectly fine, yes extended leather is desirable but I wouldn't pass on a nice car because it didn't have it.
