Why's Jonathan Ross commentating on the 1993 Donington first lap? (Fantastic clip)

Modern day F1 drivers take note!

You're all a bunch of whinging pansies!

He's going that fast in a car with NO traction control, NO power steering AND a MANUAL H-PATTERN Gearbox.

And modern F1 is the ultimate test for a driver, is it?

Just shows what wank current F1 is.

That takes talent. How many of the current F1 crop would have been able to drive to the limit in cars like that, they're spoilt now.

In 1993 most of the cars DID have traction control. It was banned from 1994 onwards (until recently, that is).

..the only reason they reintroduced it was because the top teams were cheating & had it anyway!

benetton reputedly ran it in 1994 anyway... oh and their tampered with their fuel rigs... oh and their driver crashed into his rival to win the world champ...

How dare you! Do you realise that you are talking about the greatest driver of all time?
Some people have no respect...

to add to what's already been said - I thought that the paddle shift was introduced by Barnard in 1989 - can't remember the Ferrari but it may have been the 610 but I'm probably wrong on the model, but pretty sure I'm right on the date. Ergo, by 1993 the entire field had them.

So to answer racefan's question....the current crop ought to do very well with Senna's car...t/c, auto shift, V10 engine...

yep, but that Senna lap at Suzuka he's talking about looks like 1989 or 1990 to me.

Well said that man! Couldnt agree more, the technology in F1 today has totally ruined the spectacle of someone trying to tame such a beast.

This is the whole problem with the manufacturure involvement - they must have all the gizmos otherwise how do they market their F1 involvement when the race car carries no technology to the road?

See BMW M5, Merc SLR and just about every Ferrari - they are laidened with gizmos these days. So they are never gonna want to ban the electronics (and the teams will never vote to ban them because they are financed by the manufacturures) so they are here to stay as long as each other... But they are ruining the sport as they do...

Watching Senna through 130R and then squirming under braking for the chicane is so amazing you dont even need there to be overtaking!

Donnington '93 is one of my favourite races. Not only did Senna drive one his best races, but Hill came second, in one of his best drives... The good old days...

Oh...and FYI it was Rossy who narrated on the '93 season review video by the FIA

you forgot "had the points from two races removed, was disqualified from two races and STILL won the world championship against the FIA's golden boy"

I was talking about the Monaco pole lap. Not the Donington lap. I was there for the Donington lap. And I know that active suspension and other gizmos were on the car at that point.

It was the two laps from Monaco and Suzuka that are the real stand out ones. He's soooooooooo quick into that first part of Suzuka, and yet he's taking his hand off the wheel to do multiple gear changes. At monaco he gets oversteer coming out of Loews hairpin and is still able to go light years quicker than the rest of the grid.

I suppose I should have made it clear in my original post. But I thought with me talking about gearchanges etc you'd have all realised which video's I meant!

Christ on a bike that lap of Suzuka is incredible. His gonads must have weighed more than the car!

That lap of Monaco is something very special indeed.

So much violence in the cabin, but yet so fluid and beautifull to watch.

Todays F1 is a watered down fraction of what it used to be.

What i absolutely adore about those laps of monaco and suzuka is hearing senna jabbing the throttle mid-corner, just balancing the power before nailing it. Its insane how late he brakes into the harbour chicane and the last chicane at suzuka. I know modern F1 cars brake later and harder but you cant SEE it... therefore, who cares?

Watching those laps you can appreciate the violence and speed of the thing - i honestly thought the beginning of the suzuka lap through the esses was spead up! It was only when he got to the back hairpin i realised it wasnt!

You can see how much additional work was required of an F1 driver back then.
