6 series convertible
Discussion
Hi all
Planning my next car change, and thinking of one of these, it'll not see much use around 3k p.a. happy to spend up to £10k. I'm not a fast driver so 3.0 engine would be OK, currently I drive a CLK 280 and that's fine.
What should I look out for? Refinement and low NVH is more important than performance, although I do like a car that steers nicely.
Back seat for a medium size dog, also looking for black trim.

These generally come with RFT so I'd try and find one with good old fashioned go flat tyres because they'll be quieter and just much nicer.
Thank you useful to know.In terms of drive and reliability is there much to choose from between the E64 & F12 models? I'm not too worried about infotainment etc.

You'd be looking at a 640i F12 really; as an example: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/387812408469
They do the 640D as a convertible too, but a diesel engined vert doesn't make sense to me personally
I have a 640i GC, not a convertible. The running gear is the same though. This is by far the most reliable engine they built so that would be where I d head. You ll see 30mpg unless you re being a hooligan.
Get rid of the runflats. The ride improves massively and you re unlikely to crack the alloys. I run 19 with offsets and the ride is lovely.

Some cars probably come with massive 20 inch wheels too. The bigger the wheel the more of a difference you'll notice switching between run flats and go flats. If you can find one with 18 inch and big chunky tyre walls then run flats will probably be OK. But you could always change when the time comes around. Especially if comfort and NVH are priorities. Although most cars nowadays have the bigger more fashionable alloys. My friend recently bought a 4 series with 19 inch wheels and it has run flats. I will admit that modern run flats are nowhere near as bad as the earlier versions. But switching to go flats will always see an improvement. Last thing on tyres. I'm a big fan of 4 season tyres. Especially if you don't want a separate set of winter and summer tyres.
18" are the largest wheels I'd be interested in, very little winter use so all seasons unnecessary.
640 SE sounds ideal, comments re engine good, thank you. Is the rest as sound, thinking of suspension, brakes etc? I'm guessing plenty shared with the 5 series so replacement bits not available and reasonably priced.

I've had a 2011 F13 (coupe) 640d for the last few years. The ride is fine with runflats on 19s, a little crashy and less relaxing on 20s. I don't think I noticed the difference on 18s. For the use mine gets I prefer runflats, definitely avoid the 20s either way.
In terms of parts, yes there's plenty shared with the 5 series, but not everything you might expect and in the last year it's started to get more difficult to get some parts other than from BMW, but on the positive side they were made until 2019 so there are plenty of much newer cars being broken with fairly low mileage so I've had some success that way. Mine's on 110k so it's certainly not low maintenance any more but if you're not putting too many miles on you might be fine, and the petrol should be easier to look after than the diesel.
Basically very good cars for comfortably cruising around, fast enough, great interior, extremely handsome particularly by BMW's recent standards.

The rather dull colour pallet puts me off a bit (superficiaI know) but had a steel grey (not sure what BMW call it) colour follow me today.
Certainly a handsome car.
I could do with getting up close and having a proper look. If the SL had suitable space for a dog I'd have one in a shot. I see a 640 as a decent alternative.
