I've just been chatting on the Gordon Murray thread about what makes a great daily driver. DCT/Auto versus manual, NA versus turbo, electric versus hydraulic steering, lightweight versus heavy, LSD or no LSD etc etc...

So what would be your ultimate daily driver?

4/5 seats/doors, big boot, manual, an engine that has low down torque but also will rev out, lsd, adaptive dampers, comfy cloth seats, parking sensors, reversing camera, carplay, not too big.

Basically everything my FK8 Type R has.

It would be even better with a bigger fuel tank and heated seats though laugh

I’m looking for one now to keep the BMWs for fun and make London driving more serene.
Narrowed down to Lexus. Either GS or RX under £8k

For something that I’d have to fund, fuel, maintain and which would genuinely fit into my life perfectly, I think it would be something like an M340i touring.

What I have - a diesel A6 Allroadsmile

Does absolutely everything I could want from a daily car - work, dogs, MTB carrier, comfy mile muncher, discrete

A classic Elan waits in the wings for frivolous stuff.

My ultimate daily driver would be something horribly impractical as I wouldn't need it for prosaic pursuits if it were an "ultimate" car. Ultimately I'd have other means (or people) for more mundane things.

My daily is already a 2 seater convertible though.

For me, small car.

Cheap to maintain.

Minimal driver aids.

A little bit of poke, but also economical.

Nice sound system.

I can see why, but as the owner of a Jaguar XJ, a comparative tiddler with the standard length of 5.13 metres it can be a struggle berthing it, the standard wheelbase Phantom adds 70 cm to that and the LWB 96cm !

Depends where you go of course, would advise to avoid anywhere where you need to use a car park, standard UK space is circa 4.8 metres long.

I've just put a deposit down on an NX. Comfy seats, radar cruise, lane following, etc, and a 10 year warranty. Most of my daily driving is urban or motorways so I'm prioritising comfort and reliability over "fun".

M3 Touring/Audi RS6 would do me perfectly. A nice fast estate car, thank you.

I've been running around in a LWB manual Transit van for the last week, and I was sorry to hand it back this morning to be honest, because I've enjoyed driving it so much!

So it does show that you can enjoy driving most things I think.

My F82 M4 makes a great daily driver for me, but the harsh ride does spoil the party a bit, but then I wouldn't really want it rolling around too much in the corners though. The 370Z is pretty good in that regard in comparison, because that rides the bumps much better than the M4 for example.

I really love my Toyota Crown, bought as I needed 4-doors after the Skyline and the first time I saw one was when I picked mine up. I didn't know really anything about them but now I'm obsessed as it's surpassed all I expected of it. It's not a master of anything but it's relatively quick, good on fuel and fits my family plus luggage easily. I can have a little blast around on my own or gently cruise down the motorways and it does both just great. The only thing I can think to swap with is another one, it's 20yrs old next year so I'm wondering if that time is soon but really it's doing nothing wrong.

As mentioned on another thread. I have a LWB transit custom Ltd (heated comfortable seats, CarPlay etc). It isn’t for work use, it’s only for leisure use (moving motorbikes, paddle boards etc). I actually favour it over my M4 for longer journeys. It’s a brilliant vehicle.

RS6 for me. I've owned two of them in the past and it did everything I wanted/needed and I'm sure it was capable of doing much more than what I threw at it.

Hard question

As a daily it would have to meet the needs of driving to work, trips to the shops etc and be fun to drive ?

So

Lancia Delta S4 or Peugeot 205 T16 for me please.
