I've just ordered a 5 string Stingray so in some ways I have the cart before the horse. The reason for that was that I was on a time limit to use 70% of what I'd already paid hiring a double bass (I didn't end up getting on with) towards the cost of something else.

Aaaaanyway, everyone seems to rave about these things, does anyone here actually play one? Opinions?

Stupid question probably, but can you play? I've been thinking of learning to play bass for ages but not done anything about it. On Saturday, a new freepaper dropped through the door with would you believe an ad on the front page for a Bass teacher. So now i'm gonna do it, any tips, suggestions?

Thanks.

Give me a few months and I might be able to answer your original question!!!

The Stingrays are generally good basses. However, every bass is different and just because its a Fender or a Musicman, doesn't mean you will like it. I "upgraded" to a US made Fender bass two years ago and have only played it a couple of times since...no particular reason, I just get on better with my old Mexican made Fender (i.e. the cheaper version)!

Golden Rule 1 - Warm up your fingers properly before you play.

Golden Rule 2 - Remember that you must look cool at all times. In other words, if you aren't very good then keep the playing simple so you can concentrate on posing!

The stingray is a great all rounder. It has a bright sound and is a good recording bass. The most common complaint is that the bottom two strings are always much louder than top ones, but most players seem to get round this by using an amp with a built in compressor.
Hope this helps...

My mate has had a Musicman Stingray for years and years. I play guitar myself, but according to him the Musicman is a fine instrument

I've seen some people change the pick up angle quite considerably to get round this

I've never played one (I'm a lefty so finding a decent range is a right PITA) but they're well regarded
