As we tested the LuMo car last month there is no point in describing it at great length, but from our experience we can say that there are a couple of advantages in owning the V6 Capri, rather than a similarly-powered Cortina or Escort. These boil down to the fact that the Capri was designed with the Zodiac engine in mind so that it feels very well balanced with a V6 engine installed. The other major advantage is one of silent progress at 100 m.p.h. and over; this can be attributed to the cleaner aerodynamic shape. I have no doubts, though, that if a door was fitted carelessly this advantage would soon be lost, and the writer has tried Capris that were well below standard.

As a starter for ten: bear in mind, I was a teenager back then, so memories are a bit fuzzy! I recall LuMo being the "go faster" brand for Tricentrol Ltd, who were the local Bedfordshire Ford dealer in the '70s & '80s. My Dad bought at least one of his Fords from them. I probably saw some of their cars, but wouldn't really know what I was looking at, excepting a "LuMo 105" badged mk1 Fiesta. This was around the time Dad bought his first Sierra in probably 1982/83. If I could insure it, I would have bought it. So I think it was a Ford thing, possibly to keep up with Shaw & Kilburn, who were the big DTV dealer locally. Happy to be corrected.

The Luton Motor Company LUMO don’t appear to have been around for long. I know that they were owned by an oil company and that two of the owners were mentioned by name in one magazine road test.

Wish they still wrote road tests like that these days. Shows how far cars have changed.
