Reliable PHEV With 50km+ Autonomous Range..?
Discussion
Hi all,
I am looking to buy a 3 year old estate car big enough to go on long journeys across Europe with the family and all of our stuff.
Due to tax rules where I live it needs to be a PHEV with 50km+ (30 miles) of autonomous range.
What would be a good reliable choice? I have identified the BMW 320e / 330e / 530e, the Mercedes 300 C class and E class as well as the Volvo V60 T5 as potential options. Also perhaps a Kia Cee'd sportwagon?
Any thoughts on this list or what else am I missing? The 50km range seems to limit the choices a bit.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

If you can live with an SUV rather than an estate, the Lexis NX is quoted as 37 miles (60km), and Toyota Rav4 and Suzuki Across a bit less but I think still over 50km.
If you're looking at Volvos, they, they increased the battery size on the XC60 a year or two ago, so I'm assuming they did the same on the estates, so check for the model year you're looking at.

We had a (2023) G21 330e and the BMW PHEV system is brilliant. Works seemless and a cut above rivals.
Mate just picked up a 330e touring as his first toe deep into EV and so far loves it.
Although rated 30miles our car only got 30miles in summer provided you preheated while charging. 20ish in winter was common. Not sure if it meets your criteria though?
I always advise for PHEV buy the car and a 290hp 3 series is as great an all rounder as anything out there!

The Volvo V60 T5 is a petrol engine - it's the T6 and T8 that are PHEV.
The T6 is effectively 'T5 250ish bhp petrol engine + Electric' and the T8 is 'T6 300ish bhp petrol + electric'.
As mentioned above, the battery size for these changed recently, so I think only the later ones will have 50km of range. I have a 2020 XC60 T8 with the smaller battery and the range is about 20 miles on electric, so a fair bit below 50km.
The Volvo V90 also comes in T6/T8 PHEV, but I don't think the cross-country versions of the V60/V90 have a PHEV option.
