Apple CarPlay Ultra to debut in Aston Martins.

I believe that this changes the narrative that Aston Martin has obsolete tech in their vehicles.

The articles seem to indicate that this might be the future.

Personally I don't give a st. It's a car not a music centre.

Great decision. Tons of very positive PR too. Looks like a great system.

If you don’t like you don’t have to use it. You can leave it in the bin with the nose you cut off to spite your face smile

Talking of A Car Play / A Auto, people seem to be very enthusiastic about Waze.

I might have missed something, but the only difference that I can see from other navigators, is that other Waze users can mark road events on the map, such as mobile speed cameras.

I try to obey the law anyway, so Waze seemed to be a disappointment.

Please tell me why people like it.

You said it, you can pin locations where there are Cops, accidents etc.

It does not give you any better driving directions than Google or Apple

Crowd sourced routing and data so generally much better at giving you the quickest route

I've used it for 13 years and nothing else comes close

Really nice UI too

Thank you for your comments.

I think I have discovered why I am in a muddle with Waze.
The symbol for Settings is not displayed on the screen, so I cannot change anything.
Waze even thinks my car is a motorbike.

One internet suggestion is for the app to be uninstalled, then downloaded again.
Will try that, to see if the mystery can be resolved.

You just change the settings in the app on your phone.
Settings > map display > car icon

Thank you.

As they say, "It is so easy when you know how".

The screen in my car is a touch screen, so that misled me, expecting all Waze commands to be input there.
When driving, everything to do with the phone is dealt with by the car, which is probably why I didn't think about the phone app.

Waze surprisingly good for ETAs on long trips.

Very reliable on speed limits as a back up - so useful for London and France etc

Heads up for vehicles stopped on motorways - by far the best feature.

Gets you round the back streets of Rouen when bridges closed or snarled up and a few odd adventures now and then.

Use on phone with mount in AM or CarPlay in other vehicles. Put most of destinations and possible way points on phone before leaving with good Wi-Fi so available without lengthy searches.

I don't know whether all Aston Martins with Apple CarPlay / Android Auto, have wired or wireless versions, but anyone using a cable might be interested in this gadget. Leave plugged in and providing a phones Bluetooth is switched on, the system works perfectly.

You can do that on a TomTom too (if you have time to dabble about on a touchscreen whilst trying to drive). Maybe Waze is voice activated.

But with all these user-generated alerts for temporary hazards - do they rely on users to turn them off when the hazard has gone? My TomTom often alerts me to cameras that aren't there. And are we heading to the satnav forum?

Precisely this, if there are hazards reported as you are passing you are asked if it s still there. This is especially useful for car broken down in hard shoulder or mobile police presence, e.g. lying in wait next to motorway or with mobile speed traps.

I’ve use many diff satnavs, used to use tomtom, which was great but now is pretty much obsolete, the jaguar in car nav on my old daily was very good for map view and re-routing with live updates, google maps is fair. But they all pale compared to Waze due to the user input, it’s more accurate and reliable in re-routing to avoid long delays.

Funnily enough I use a Quadlock wireless CarPlay adapter in my prefacelift dbx 707. It’s been more reliable than the standard wired cable!

All the waze stuff is available in Google maps. Know why? Google own Waze, have done for some time

Ahhh you were suckered in by the millions of quad lock adverts everywhere. Chuckle, not a slight against you, I really just have had enough of quad lock adverts.
I think most of it in terms of the big brand adapters is a bit of a con and over-priced, many of these are simply own branded Chinese units and function exactly the same as much cheaper alternatives.

Considering you have the archaic Mercedes infotainment system in the prefacelift Dbx I can completely understand need for CarPlay adapter. Interesting to hear the wired connection is not that reliable, it’s been completely reliable in my old f-pace, to the point I’ve not bothered with a wireless adapter as it made more sense to plug the phone in to charge and using a short cable primarily for tidiness, but also stops you thinking about picking your phone up.

I drive an F-pace as daily and would love to upgrade it to a Dbx but I cannot put up with the Mercedes infotainment system and control in the pre-facelift, I hated it when it came out in 1998, over 25 years later that hasn’t changed. I’m sure it’s better than it was now with touchscreen input but still.

So I’ve instead upgraded to a facelift F-pace SVR while I wait for facelift Dbx 707 to be more available on second hand market and more affordable.

Yes Google own Waze but they operate as a separate app with their own unique functionality, specifically designed around community and user input.
My experience of Google maps was that it was good, I used to use it before converting several years ago, but the rerouting in Waze seems better and is automatic, Google I recall seeing the time jump up or not reduce and then having to investigate why and ask it to search for a new route.

As we know, the Aston Martin / Mercedes-Benz technical agreement did not permit use of the latest M-B software.
Understandable from M-Bs side.

I suppose AM had no alternative but to create their own infotainment system, because by installing M-B Command instead of the latest M-B MBUX, would have led to comments about being obsolete.

I’ve noticed that many of the well seasoned road trippers use Waze. I’ve been on Google Maps for years and therefore have the UK and Western Europe peppered with saved favourites and trip location lists in the system so am loathed to change. Is there a way to migrate these across somehow as I’m not going to start again.
