Cheapest House

I am giving a talk on Council Tax next week. I could do with the address and a photo of the cheapest house in England that anyone knows of that is being marketed or has recently sold.

My intention being to compare it the value of it and the council tax it pays with the most expensive house.

So if you happen to know a really cheap house near you and can send me its address and a photo of it I’d be grateful.

I regularly browse various of the house auctions.

Quite often terraces in County Durham are guided at £5k or thereabouts and don't fetch much more.

Interesting. The first one sold for £15,000 it’s Council Tax is £1,847.45, the most expensive house in England is £210 million and the council tax is £3,138.92

How much does it cost to empty the bins in each case?

Surely the cost of a service or product shouldn't depend the wealth of an individual, or the value of their property?

You mean... like a... tax based on whether someone is old enough to vote. Call it... a polling station attendance tax... too long... how about a polling tax... still too long... how about... a poll tax?

Actually I agree, though living in the People's Republic of South Yorkshire at the time it got tedious with the Can't Pay Won't Pay shouty protestors and when I sold up and moved out turned out the buyers were of that ilk and refused to register. Sheffield Council got very arsey with me, now living in a completely different county, as they couldn't trace the previous addresses of the buyers, first timers.

My lad rents out his first house , he’s had 3 lots of renters , the first two never paid any council tax , the council never properly chased them for the first year! It’s no wonder the councils are strapped for cash if they leave it until the debt is unaffordable, in both cases we pointed the debt enforcers to the forwarding adresses .

Just one example, lots around that price

Liverpool city council were selling run down houses for £1 but I'm not sure if that scheme is still going on

It is - but that won't change the distribution of that charge depending on which council you're in.

It's only a component of council funding. Those councils with very high levels of other forms of income generation don't need to charge much for living there.

Or to put it another way why would it be assumed that high house prices mean the residents are wealthy? Nurses, teachers, cleaners, shop assistants etc don't earn multiples more in the SE vs NE.

I can’t imagine anyone living in a £15k house pays council tax…

You could be eligible if you’re on a low income or claim benefits. Your bill could be reduced by up to 100%.

You can apply if you own your home, rent, are unemployed or working.

Exactly. We're all paying it for millions of households in the U.K.

It's part of the 'miscellaneous' amount in our breakdowns. Which in the case of Campden was around 80% at one point.
