Hi All,

I've not been on for a while and now in the process of bringing my cerbera back to life after about 2 years of sleeping in my garage

I've done all the usual oil and filter change, plugs, new battery, coils and coolant flush.

I've gone to start the car..but nothing when pressing the starter button?!?. all the lights and switches work and strangely the boot release is going on and off like mad!!

I've checked the ignition module in the boot and all looks fine inside with no burnout marks on the pub.

Any help would be greatly appreciated?!?!

many thanks everyone

While we wait for more knowledgeable people to comment, it sounds like an immobiliser issue. Does the fuel pump prime?

Hi Farmyardpants

No the fuel doesn't prime. I get nothing when I press the start button no lights or anything.

A few things I've tried this morning;
checked for a live feed to the ignition control box in the boot-OK
checked the fusses in the boot.all OK
checked the fuses behind the helmet holder ...all ok
My windows and lights all work. hazards work but nothing else on the steering

strange never happened before it was parked up

thanks

FWIW - It'll be worth checking all the earth points too.

Sadly, I don't know where they are.

OK - if you are getting no lights from the Start / Stop button then it sounds like it is the immobiliser / alarm at play which is blocking any priming of the car

The immobiliser is on a separate fuse to the alarm, so you can try by-passing this using the "fob" and the slot on the dashboard and try priming the car with this connected

I had a similar situation when I blew the passenger door window fuse, which also runs the alarm on the early 4.2s, but could still start the car by disabling the immobiliser with the "fob" connected

BTW just for information the alarm and the immobiliser are chained together so disabling the alarm also disables the immobiliser, but they can be disabled separately

Try this and see if you have any progress

[edit] the other thing to check is the silver key in the center console which also disables any priming of the fuel pump and the engine. On mine I have this replaced with a switch, but if this is loose, wire broken, or just turned off, then the car won't prime at all. HTH

Silver key knocked?
Checked the fuel pump fuse?
Battery low?

But it's sounding like the immobiliser.

Have you tried the square fob in the slot to ensure the immobiliser is off, not just pushing the button. With the power on, you should see a red LED flash once every second when the immobiliser is enabled.

button pushed to turn off the immobiliser, you should hear the pump energising. If not try the square fob.

Does the flashing LED on the immobiliser slot stops flashing when you insert your key tag, or press the button, if so the immobiliser is disarmed.

Byker28i/Juddder,

thanks for the pointers ...much appreciated, but im really stumped now.
I've done:
  • Silver key bypass done
  • new battery
  • immobiliser bypass done (two sets of wires)
  • immobiliser on centre console goes off after flashing but pump doesn't energuse
  • fuses checked
  • Relays checked
  • fob connected and then tried to start - Nothing?!?! not even the pump is priming and still no ignition lights
I do have power to the Silver key and to the ciggy lighter?!!

Also checked the footwell on passenger side fuse and that's OK too

thanks again all

You could check the inertia switch hasn't tripped,

Also check the 100A fuse at the back of the engine. Since you're not getting pump, starter or ignition lights it must be something fundamental. There's also a 100A fuse behind the carpet in front of the passenger side door but that feeds the fuse box in the boot - but if you have anything working at all it's unlikely to be that.

The boot switch going on and off like mad could be a badly adjusted badge holding the button down slightly. Happened on mine and burned out the actuator. I would disconnect the actuator and switch just in case it's messing with things.
