Ford Focus RS (Mk1) | Spotted

The GTI has well earned its Edition 50 variant - but just imagine what might have been had Ford kept its foot in

It would be a stony-hearted soul who didn’t appreciate Volkswagen’s efforts to keep its Golf GTI relevant in a market moving away from the ICE hot hatch at depressing speed. In terms of cars driven by the front axle exclusively, it will almost certainly be a case of ‘first in, last out’ for VW’s epoch-making model. Think what you like about the GTI’s ranking in a running order based on dynamic talent - but the car’s place in history is cast in cement. Many have challenged; none have ultimately stayed the distance.

It is incredible to think that we must include Ford among that number, unquestionably a thorn in VW’s side for much of the five decades that the Golf GTI has been with us. For a time, the Blue Oval managed to make anything its rival did look staid and boring. The distance between the two is a tale best told by each brand’s proxy in the supermini segment, the Fiesta ST being a mid-flight firework in comparison to the depressingly grounded Polo GTI. Accordingly, you see many of the former, and very few of the latter.

Of course, that did not save the Fiesta (the Polo, meanwhile, persists) and nor did it save the Focus, despite the latter producing three generations of RS, built between 2002 and 2018, that tower over anything Volkswagen achieved - save, perhaps, the Mk7 Clubsport S, the exception that proves the rule. We might have landed on any used example to illustrate the point, but given the Edition 50’s homage to history, it only seems fair to dwell on the pitch-perfect Mk1.

We say ‘perfect’ - it was not, for reasons that people were quick to point out at the time. But it was also wonderfully bonkers and palpably special, both for the way it was built and for the way it went. It hardly seems feasible that VW would have agreed to 70 per cent of the Golf’s components being switched out or modified. But that’s what Ford did, including its custom-built 2.0-litre Garrett turbo’d engine, its uniquely ratio’d ‘box, its Quaife ATB diff, its Sachs dampers, its bigger brakes, its 18-inch OZ Racing wheels and its many WRC styling cues.

In 2025, 215hp might appear mundane, but to experience it in the Mk1 simply confirms the current horsepower malaise: the RS was (and is) as interactive as a rolling maul and terrifically capable if you choose to do things in a way that suits the diff. This tends to require concentration, a commodity that most modern cars like to keep at the end of a ten-foot barge pole. The commensurate Golf GTI - an admirable return to form in Mk5 costume - required no such effort either. But it was an all-rounder’s cricket bat; the RS felt like the tip of the hot hatch spear.

Accordingly, and unsurprisingly for a much-liked fast Ford, you will pay through the nose for a good one. This one - one of several sparingly used examples on PH - is available for £49,990 having accrued just 5,700 miles under the careful supervision of its single owner. Is it worth that much? Objectively speaking, probably not. But when the RS first came out, in light of the prices being paid at the time for Escort Cosworths, some people deliberately set out to keep their cars box-fresh from day one. Precious few Golf GTIs have ever been treated with so much respect on such a consciously large scale. Which makes VW’s attentive treatment of its hot hatch, in contrast to Ford’s ill-considered exit from the market, all the more ironic.

Looks amazing, is basically a new car for 2,5 times its original price. Am curious as to what this low mileage example would have depreciated to and when that would have been, before the value started rising?

Amazed. You'll really need to be a Ford fan boy to invest £50k in one of these and then not be able to use it for fear of putting mileage on it.
Each to their own I suppose

Some of the best looking wheels ever.

Got the overall looks spot on especially considering how bland the base spec mk 1 focus looks.

£50k is madness though.

Liked them when they came out, but bought a CLIO Cup 172 - OU52 VDY - instead. Still like the RS even now… was at Caffeine & Machine yesterday:

And yet... not a single Mk1 Focus RS amongst the lot.

I owned a Mk1 Focus RS, will have pictures of it somewhere, definitely a car I massively regret selling. I know that the Mk1 Focus RS has it's own specific owners groups and they display together at the big Ford shows, I used to be in it.

Mine wasn't a low mileage garage queen, I sold it on about 85000 miles and it was running sweet, always got a lot of positive attention when I was out on the road.

I owned a number of other Fords including a Mk2 Focus ST and a Mk3 Focus ST but nothing came near to the Mk1 RS for experience

As a massive Ford fan, it genuinely saddens me that they’ve stopped making the fast ones. They did it so brilliantly.

Massively regret selling mine. I brought it totally standard from RS Direct in 2013 with an Afghan Tour bonus. It had only done 31,000 miles, and cost me £10,000! It was immaculate. Owned it and modified it over 4 years, it never missed a beat and was my daily driver for 3 of them. Loved it, really want another one in my life.

Yep, I was lucky enough to have owned 2 Focus RS mark 2s and a mark 3. Often tempted with the Fiesta ST too. Such well sorted cars that put a huge smile on your face smile

I owned one in 2009-11. Sold it for £7.5k!!! Ok it looked the part and had all the gear but it didn't really live up to the RS name imho. The motor was a bit rough over 5krpm and it wasn't really that fast. It was firmer than my 140i and people Mock that for it! Funny how time dulls the senses eh? Glad I owned one though but for me £20k for a really good example is all I'd want to pay to get back into one.

Fabulous. I know people slate the interior, but I love everything about them. It made a statement and remains one of the best-looking hot hatches of all time. I'd buy one with more miles that I could drive and enjoy, but still great.

What a shame that Ford have abandoned making interesting, affordable cars in favour of a line-up of dreary crossovers and SUVs.

A perfectly proportioned car that still holds up design wise 20+ years later. Looked so futuristic at the time compared to what everyone else manufactured.

Totally agree re the wheels and the overall looks, though I like a standard MK1 focus anyway, especially the 3 door.
5 Spoke alloys do look great, loved them on my ZT120.

As for £50k, I'd guessed that sort of figure before I saw it.

Got to say I love these, never driven one, and looking at the prices I'm unlikely ever to, I've read they can be a handful but that just adds to their allure and they look absolutely fantastic, I like a 3 door MK1 anyway but the RS just looks so right in my opinion.

Each to their own I suppose but it's not where I would put my £50K.

As an investment it may make sense but...

You could get them for around six grand, as I recall.

Of course - no Mk 1’s in that line!

There were more on the other side of the field & a Mk 1 was ‘alone’ over by the exit - didn’t picture those / that one…

I only snapped this one line as it’s currently a ‘thing’ in my house with 3 teenagers, they are bitterly opposed to the demise of ICE ‘cool’ cars… so they like to see & experience as much ICE as possible - wherever possible - that’s why I sent the line of Focii picture…

Fancy an ultimate green Mk3 - but with 6 cars already - I HAVE to stop collecting, no more space… also - I see decent ones are £40k to £50k - wow! So much for the democratisation of performance for the masses??!!

My girlfriend and I had a Mk1 Focus 1.8 Ghia. The handling was fantastic and it felt like a gocart.
We thrashed that thing around for 12 years then stupidly scrapped it rather than pay to fix a crank sensor.
It was the best handling normal car I've ever driven.

Replaced it with a Civic EP3 / EV1 and always wish I could get back in the focus.
