Suspect CV joint .

Just been out in the Chim and noticed a speed related knocking when almost at standstill..First impression were a loose rear wheel so stopped and checked, all was ok.. Drove 5 miles, pulled into a car park and at walking pace the noise was fairly loud. A sort of cracking, knocking noise deffinitely rotational and at deffinite intervals.!! First reaction is CV joint.. 2nd reaction is, could it be the diff.??? Noise goes off completely above 40mph and it doesnt always do it ??? Any ideas ??
I had CV joint problems a while ago, its showed its self as a vibration through the car. With two up and full fuel the vib wasn't there, but as the fuel was used the vib became more apparent.
I phoned the gearbox man www.gearboxman.co.uk Told him my symptoms and he was very helpful. Ended up going to reco prop www.reco-prop.com I had both drive shafts striped and balanced, 2 CV joint replaced and the prop shaft UJs check and lubricated with a balance as well and the whole lot came in at under £230.

Hmm could this be the problem I am having ? How bad would the vibration be - I have a bad problem right now keep <70MPH everything is fine between 70 and 100 (on private road of course) it vibrates so much that I cant see where I am going, car feels like its going to fly apart - but then >110 no vibration. Very weird. Had a suspension adjuster replaced a while back so I am suspecting that but maybe its the problem described in this thread. Thoughts anyone ?
Its totally speed related, any other speed, any revs no vibration. As soon as I noticed it I had all 4 wheels rebalanced, plus had a mechanic go over all the wishbones, suspension and such to make sure nothing was adrift. The only comment he made was that the n/s track rod end was a bit loose - but that wouldnt cause the vibration.
About to book it in for some expert attention, no doubt costing me many beer tokens...

If the steering wheel is vibrating in your hand then its a wheel balance problem (probably a buckled wheel). Most garages wont be able to balance a wheel at these speeds and they do it off the car. Take it to someone who will be able to balance the wheels at high speed on the car, you should be able to find them in the phone book.
If its not coming through the steering, then its the rear of the car. To be doubly sure of this, drive the car so its vibrating then dip the clutch, allow the engine to return to idle, if the vib stays the same then its the gearbox back on the car. Could be a prop shaft or drive shaft. As you have done most of the hard work to get access to them, then you might as well get them all checked.

Thanks for the help - sorry I hijacked the thread. No vibration through steering the whole car shakes like mad so its in the rear somewhere. Time to get it looked at *sigh*

Probably a lose bolt in the drive shaft system, or the speedo wheel could be hitting the sender. Get the car up and have a look, if its not immediately obvious then I would get someone to have a look at it.
