Hello everyone, I was wondering if anybody could help me.

I’m looking at purchasing a Range Rover Classic 2 door. This is a South African import brought into the U.K. approx 12 months ago. All the taxes, duties etc have been paid and I’ve seen all the documentation and it all looks above board in that respect and I have spoken to the import company to confirm it’s ready for registering.

My issue is, when I went to view the car I could not find a VIN number stamped onto the chassis (looking behind drivers side front wheel on chassis behind the bolts that hold the steering box on). A couple of people have said they didn’t stamp every chassis on the old two doors I’m not sure how much truth is in that. The car has its VIN plate just under the bonnet.

My worry is that if the car gets inspected during the registering process and they search for a chassis VIN I’ll be stuck with a car that’s only good for a Q plate which is not viable for me.

Has anybody been in a similar situation? The import guy on the phone said they ‘might’ inspect it. I would like to purchase the car but I need to get around this hurdle. Perhaps the number was stamped in a different location?

Sorry if it’s in the wrong forum section, I’ve had to make a new account and I’m restricted at the moment.

The export ones were shipped in knock down form and the VIN is in a different place. Can't recall if it's on the crossmember but I'll ask a colleague where they are on the knock downs.

Meanwhile, there's a RRC thread in the classic car forum.

Had it confirmed. The knock down exports didn't have numbers on the chassis.

Thanks for taking your time to find out, I appreciate it. Where has this info come from?

I wonder if this will pose a threat of a ‘Q’ plate if they inspect the vehicle for registering and expect to find a stamped chassis number..

Someone who has imported CKD 2 doors from SA, restored them and registered them for the U.K.

If you google SA imports for sale you'll see lots have been imported in recent years and put on date appropriate U.K. plates.

That’s the guy I need. I’ve spoken to import companies, DVLA, DVSA all been no help unfortunately. Would it be possible at all to ask this chap if I could speak with him on the phone just to put my mind at ease with a couple of things? Really appreciate it. Thanks.

Some unscrupulous folk might say the whole process could be easier if you found a chassis plate (ie the one that is riveted on the front slam panel) of a scrapped UK car in the same colour, same engine and of roughly the same age….and lo and behold, all your problems go away.
