I currently have a M135i 2022 i have had it about 14 months and looking to change -

I have had an S3 , Golf R recently so all similar

budget is 40k

Mrs has an SUV so no worries on practicality and my commute is about 10 minutes

Options i’ve considered so far and my thoughts

M2 Comp F87 - back to old tech from the new cabin
Porsche 718 Cayman - cant stretch to a cayman s
Jaguar F type 3.0 V6 - inside a little dated again
Toyota Supra - on paper fits my budget perfect but not quite sure

Any advice appreciated

What do you tend to appreciate? Character, speed, looking back at it, getting use etc?

I had an F20 M135i and loved it, Jekyl and Hyde nature of it, noise etc.

I went to a 987.1 Cayman S after that and it was a dream. So much fun, still did the practical stuff that I didn't really need it to.

After the Cayman I went to a Mustang. That had so much character, did long journeys, and put a massive smile on my face on shorter ones.

For £40k I would be looking at Lexus RC F, 981 Boxster/Cayman S (or GTS if they've dropped that far), TT S/RS if they're in budget and you want something newer.

Have you test driven any on your option list? You mention the Cayman, but can't stretch to an S. I wouldn't simply discount the base engine Caymans or Boxsters - go see one and give it a drive - you might be very pleasantly surprised!

With a similar budget (although it started lower!) I bought a 2019 Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio at the weekend.

I didn't expect much when I went to see it - in fact, I wasn't even sure I'd buy anything right now but I loved it.

Really nice interior - multimedia stuff is a bit dated (unless you spend more / buy newer) but apart from that it's gorgeous inside. Very quick - but surprisingly, that isn't the bit that impressed me most. The handling is sublime.

It really clicked with me, and I'm looking forward to picking it up. There aren't so many for sale but they do fall into your budget. I don't need practicality either (usually have 2 seater cars) - so I've surprised myself that I've just bought a 5 seater! But very happy I've done so.

I'd be very tempted by the Supra from your list I think.

718 Caymans are immense to drive. Even the engine is a peach. Not for a 4 cylinder, just as an engine. It’s got this real raw feel to it, and needs hammering.

Once I’m back on track finance wise I’d love to be in a 718 Boxster manual, having owned a 918 S the 718 would be my preferred car. So much fun to drive.

Agree ideally i would be able to get a Cayman and i do find them the best looking and desirable car

I have always wanted and M2 F87 but maybe i'm a few years too late wish i got one instead of the M135i last year and i probably wouldnt be looking to change.

i think it might be worth me test driving a supra all the modern tech i want and still a b58 with a bit of power

2 seaters always feel that little bit more special to drive and sit in as well for me. I love how you can get the Supra with a manual gearbox now as well.

Yes, I always find 2 seaters feel a bit more special and I think the Supras look great. Plus I like a manual box!

Rather than an M2, I'd be looking at an M4/3 CS:

Exige S:

Or if they're a bit to hardcore then the Evora, is still to this day one of th sweetest steers I've ever driven:

Out of that list, the Supra.

You'll be bored of the others in 14 months again

A bit different from your own suggestions but for a £40k sports car I would be buying an Alpine (says the Alpine owner).
Your budget would buy a 2021 S with 300 bhp and they only weigh 1100kg so properly quick, infotainment is a bit rubbish until mid-2022, you might get one of those in 250 bhp guise or by spending a bit more.

Out of interest, what’s wrong with the 135i? It’s a car that’s on my short list at the moment.

Cheers!

This. How many of them do you see?

All the rest are 10 a penny.

Depends why you want to own a car. IMO don’t get one just because it’s rarer than the others. Get it because you like it.

The rareness of it won’t make you want to get up at 5am on a sunny Sunday to go for a blast.

Nothing wrong with the m135i modern and very practical good performance etc just want something either a bit more extreme or more of a “sports car” 👍
