Exhaust / exhaust tips for 993

Bet this has been done to death already, but a quick search did not reveal a simple answer.
The exhaust tips on my new 993 (pic in my profile, of the car not the tips) are looking a bit scruffy, so thought a new set of tips would be the answer - but do I really have to pay £150 for a couple of bits of shiny pipe?
It seemed rather a lot so it got me thinking should I be looking at a sports/other exhaust upgrade? And if I do go that route would it include new tips anyway?
Recommendations and suggestions welcome.

Right - the tips for the 993 standard body and the 993 turbo fit each other.
The 993 C2S and C4S use exhaust tips with a different "offset".
Alot of the aftermarket exhaust systems use the same method as Porsche, seperate the tips from the silencers so that people who have already shelled out for tips can keep them, or so that they can sell some nice expensive tips in addition to the exhausts. If you want exhausts with nice tips all-in-one, have a look at Fabspeed's offerings. Maxflows i understand are nice, similar sound to the RSR's, but the Supercup makes any n/a 993 sound like a full on RACE CAR!!!

Get them during the week, put them on the car at the weekend. Drive them round until the next weekend.
If you like them, send your standard boxes and about £300 to Belgium. If you don't like them, take them off, put your standard ones back on, and send them back to Belgium.
So the worst you've got to lose (if you do it yourself) is a couple of hours work and £25 postage.
If you're not confident of doing it yourself, you can always come to my place and i can show you how/lend a hand.

Dan I've got a midnight blue C2 like yours and am considering some lowering springs. It looks like yours has been done. You pleased with the result & handling?
VS - the RSR exhaust, I'm intrigued. I like the sound of my 993 but the 'noise/wail' from the engine is not as 'aggressive' as I'd hoped, even at high revs.
Does the RSR hit the spot without sounding like I've been to A&B autospares along with all the Saxo drivers?!!

Yes it has been lowered. I had it done the minute I got the car, I'm very pleased indeed. Think it was waaay to high before. You should definitely go for it.
Though it is now really low.
To my surprise I really notice it getting in and especially out of the car. If you have it done don't forget to budget for having the alignment re-done - its more than just the £150 for the springs

Dan, be careful when you fit oversize exhust tips to standard or RSR boxes, as they can get a bit hot and actually melt the edges of the PU if they get slightly out of line.
Your car is lowered, so there is a chance that you will ground the new tips and knock them out of line in the PU where it is cut-out.
I dont know if anyone with narrow bodied 993 has the Turbo heat shields fitted inside the cut-outs to protect against this very problem. I understand from Gert at Carnewal that you can fit these on a 993 C2 or C4 and I was thinking about adding these.

I don't particularly want larger tips, just ones that look a bit smarter. The shields sound like a good idea though.

Dan, if you just want to smarten up the existing tips, I was told that if you remove them from the car, they polish up well using one of those green kitchen sponges. Those ones with the abrasive foam mat on one side and sponge on the other (not the wire wool ones)I`ve not tried this myself, so can`t guarantee if it works.
You will need to replace the O-rings that clamp them in place but these are quite easy and cheap to get.
I've had Fabspeed Supercups on mine (search this forum for my demented rantings about them, VS is correct, they make a n/a 993 sound like a race car). Utter mentalism, they will make virtually all TVRs sound like euroboxes.
Very very inappropriate for pretty much everything except shutting up *every* single Nova-boy you come across
I'm now running Cargraphic sport backboxes with Cargraphic tips as supplied by Ninemeister. Fantastic sound - quiet on normal use, but a spiteful rasping howl when nailed. It's not massively bassy and resonant. The tips IIRC fit normal back boxes, and Cargraphic have 6 styles (again, IIRC) - though you're right, they cost $$$ (for what they are).
RSRs come highly recommended by everyone who has them, and are very cost effective, so you'd be crazy not to consider them.
I utterly *love* the way my car sounds now however, so here's a vote for the Cargraphic stuff. If you fancy hearing mine then mail me, I'm in Kent
My fantasy exhausts would basically be the Cargraphics with a simple switch to bypass the silencers à la Fabspeed. I think Ruf do a big-$$$ switchable system for the 993, but their gear is over my budget

They're a piece of piss to fit. An 18 year old Peugeot technician who'd never worked on a Porsche before fitted my Supercups for me, no problems at all. Only aggro you'll get is removing the old retaining straps, which will be shagged and you'll need new ones. Then it's just a question of wiggling them around *before* tightening everything up to ensure they are both pointing out properly.
Shouldn't have to pay £160 fitting.
See if you can get to listen to Maxflos before you buy, the Fabspeed website claim the Supercups are both road legal and only have slight resonance. I presume they must have been sniffing NOS before they wrote that, as the pipes are sheer mentalism.
If, however, they sound like a tamed Supercup without the brain-destroying resonance between 2 and 3k rpm then they'd be good!!!
Fitting just tips you should be able to do yourself if you can get under the car. They are held on by round pipe clamps, you'll need new bolts.
If you listen to the sound clip I made after fitting the Maxflo's it will give you an idea of the sound they make. It is the OEM exhaust first followed by the Maxflo's. Lovely and deep and burbly!!!
