Time has come to sell my LCI G21 M340i and am looking at getting a lowish mileage (<35k miles) SUV as a replacement which is fun to drive when needed but also has a modern interior. In an ideal world I'd go maybe for a used X5 50e but it's stretching my budget to perhaps beyond what I can/should go to so I've decided to stick to a max budget of £45k.

Looking at the LCI BMW X3 M40i, Mercedes GLC43 (not the coupe), Lexus RX though I'm not so keen on the looks and Jaguar F-Pace (maybe getting too long in the tooth?)...anything else I should check out?

Porsche Macan is an obvious choice, as is the Cayenne if you are considering E segment like the X5.

I wouldn’t rule out the F-Pace for being long in the tooth. If you’re sticking with ICE I don’t think things have come far from what you’d get with a 2021 facelift onwards.

Pivi Pro entertainment system is still excellent, the D300 is still a modern engine, it’s still one of the best looking SUVs and it still drives well for an SUV. The facelift interior is mini-Range-Rover-esque and a very nice place to spend time.

I had the SVR; I’d say it’s probably the best car I’ve owned. If you can stretch to one I guarantee you won’t be disappointed with it, although the D300 is still a good car.

If you’re looking at the X3 from ‘21 onwards, we currently have the electric version (iX3) and it’s also a very good car. Interior is behind the Jag but the systems are on a par. Doesn’t feel as well made, though - the doors sound very tinny when shutting them.

Mercs are just grim. Tasteless, nasty things for people who like Dubai.

Lexus RX is super comfy but no fun. Great car, though.

F-pace SVR or Macan GTS for me given the criteria.

Thanks for all the suggestions. GTS with reasonable miles seems out of budget when I checked...what's the S like?

If you like BMW engines/gearbox/controls and like the X5, why not just get a 40d or 40i ? Lots of pre-LCI ones, which I prefer (separate screens, real climate / shortcut buttons etc etc) in your budget. Even 30d would be fine - X5 is an imperious cruiser, much more than the 3 series is.

I had a similar dilemma recently, especially X5 vs X3, looked at loads, decided I just wanted the extra lux feel and refinement of the X5, then veered off in a completely different direction and signed up to a Skoda Enyaq on business lease.

I'm in slight shock that ZX10R didn't recommend these...

Not sure it helps, but we're currently replacing our Mercedes GLC with a Volvo XC40.
