The growing sale of illegal tobacco in mini marts across British high streets,

So much for net positive immigration... with this lot there will never be positive growth. It would seem that it is rife across the country and involves huge amounts of money that HMRC never see. It really is a disaster in so many ways for this country, a disaster that this government have to address properly if they are to have any chance of being re-elected.

I don't really see this as a new problem or an immigration issue, this was a thing 40 years ago when I was a kid. It's generally a symptom of under-funded enforcement organisations. Anyone remember when you used to have Trading Standards?

I don't see this as an immigration issue, it has been going on for years. Nor do I see it as a problem specific to the labour party. But I know for some everything is either down to immigration (which in itself seems to vary from "anyone who isn't white" to "all those boat people taking over the UK") or it's Labour fault totally ignoring what has happened (or not) over the previous 14 years.

That and the very high prices to buy tobacco legally - 40 years ago the incentive for illegal tobacco wasn't so high.

I doubt back then you'd have had the shop-owner in Court being fined and at the same time the shop still selling illegal stuff.

It is epidemic. 7 vape shops within 110 yards in our local town ?

Its not an immigration issue per se but a criminal enterprise based overseas using the UK as a soft touch.

Should raid every single shop and confiscate all the contents of both the shop and the bank accounts of the 'owners'

They are taking the piss.

We should be targeting the market as much as the dealers.

You'd have to be a simpleton to think it was above board - Start IDing the buyers and send them a bill for the duty owed.

Word will soon get around.

Are some people absolutely obsessed with the subject of immigration?

Smoking seems a bit quaint these days, doesn't it?

Unfortunately it seems to be growing in popularity with youngsters.

Obsession with immigration is traditionally popular with the old.

Kids around my way appear to be into vaping, not smoking.

It is the Laffer Curve in action. Duty has been raised so high the smuggling is more and more profitable to the extent that with higher duty rates income declines.

"Official figures recently published by HMRC indicate a huge rise in illicit tobacco sales in the UK since 2021. The number of duty-paid cigarettes sold plummeted from 23.6 billion in 2021 to 13.2 billion in 2024, a decline of 44.4%. In the same period, sales of duty-paid hand rolling tobacco (HRT) have dropped from 8.6 million kilograms to 4.5 million kilograms, a decline of 47.6%. Overall, the number of cigarettes bought on the legal market fell by 45.5% between 2021 and 2024.

This unprecedented decline in legal tobacco sales occurred despite the number of smokers falling only modestly. When population growth is taken into account, the number of smokers declined by just 0.5 percentage points between 2021 and 2024, a relative decline of 5%. Nor can the decline in legal sales be explained by smokers consuming fewer cigarettes. Research published last year found that daily cigarette consumption has remained stable since 2020 at around 10.5 cigarettes per smoker on average."

The govt should recognise that higher tobacco duy is counter productive. It doesn't make more people stop smoking. Meanwhile the govt loses tax revenue.

Never forget when smokers are paying legal duty at a suitable rate they are a net benefit to the govt. Their taxes more than cover healthcare costs and they save a fortune in benefits and pension costs by dying early.

The reduction in smoking in the UK has been significant. Long may it continue.

Smoking is stupid.

Agreed. Even more stupid is letting criminals enjoy the revenue rather than it going to the govt.

As it was the standard "NP&E old man shaking fist at clouds" response, other than no mention of immigrants, I wasn't sure if you were serious.
