It's practically doubled in the last year or so, what's driving this and is there likely to be any let up?

I know that it boils down to supply and demand but what's the root cause of the shortage in supply?

Droughts in the US and Brazil. US cattle herd is the lowest since 1951. Feeding cattle grain and other stuff that isn't grass is expensive, so farmers have been reducing their herds.

The weather has been uncooperative causing problems with food for the livestock. Farmers round by me are talking about having to sell livestock if we don't have some sustained rain soon. No one has any grass, and we're already using last years hay.

Go to the cattle market and see the price cast cows are getting. It's slipped back a wee bit in recent weeks but still very high.

like a rib eye steak and prices went easily from 30 to 50 £ per kg. Back to maybe £45 now but still too high for most normal folks.

You'll see the prices are high.

You want quality, you want high welfare you have to pay for it. otherwise get imported stuff, frozen from Iceland.

UK consumers are bizarre: want good food. High Quality but want to pay piss poor prices

From what I can tell a % of the increases are also down to additonal costs to the retailer. My catering butchers prices have gone up but not by a significant amount although they do have their own herds, 1200+ Aberdeen Angus and Charolais.

Aldi are doing 2 pack of 30d matured ribeyes for £9.49 here in Scotland at the moment. Cheapest I have seen in a while. They dont look the best but for the price cant argue yet to eat it though.

The regular is well over £6 now for a single 227g steak. Fillet 180g is about £7 ish.

I was in M&S the other day and a fillet was £20. Mental.

My mrs, who rarely goes shopping still thinks a decent steak is about four quid!!

I buy as much of our meat as possible from one of our local butchers and willingly pay their prices, it's worth every penny.

Price of beef has not practically doubled in the last year. Yes it has increased substantially but the increase is around 20% according to the fillet beef we buy from Ocado.
A year ago two organic fillet steaks from Ocadow were £16.25 they are now £19.62 which is a price increase of just over 20%.
A year ago a Hawksmoor centre cut fillet steak was £25 it is now £30 from Ocado so again a 20% increase.
The M+S steaks do seem to have gone up by more than 20% the Dry aged fillet steak is now £20 whereas a year ago it was £14 so a 43% increase.

M&S is where I usually get my steaks, £9 for a sirloin yesterday, I don't do it as often as I used to and therefore make an effort to go to a butchers on the odd occasions I do fancy one now.

I was about to post how I used to pay 3.99 a kilo the day after new year if I bought whole 5 bone ribs at bookers but remembered that was 15 years ago!

So I checked... its still only 9.99 a kilo.

I thnk I'll be picking some up.

I've been shopping around for beef since the price hike there is usually an offer to be has in one of the supermarkets and I give the butcher shops a look as well, yesterday got some nice inch thick t-bones with a third of the price off. Very nice they were too.
