We've had this sofa 15 years or more, and with the occasional cat 'accident' as well as more recently baby/toddler getting in on the act, I dread to think how grim the sofa is by now.

What's the best way to give the big cushions that make up the bulk of the sofa a clean? With another heatwave coming I'm wondering if we take the cushions outside and get the hose and fairy liquid out and drench them then leave to dry in the sun?

We've been using Febreeze as a quick fix to the slightly unpleasant smells that sometimes radiate, but clearly we need to do more than just masking the problem.

Any thoughts?

New sofa. Yours sounds a bit grim.

Buy one that you can remove and wash the covers. Makes a huge difference.

Can you borrow/hire one of these?

If the covers are removable, stick on a cool wash, if not, use one of these.

Yes, new sofa of course ideal solution, we just want our daughter to get a little bit older before we drop thousands on that route.

Hmmmmm, might be worth just investing in that, not ridiculously expensive.

If the covers are removable stick them in the washer at 40* and the lowest spin setting your washer will do.

Wash in multiple loads… don’t cram them all in.

As soon as the program finishes, take the covers out and put them back on the cushions. Then leave to dry naturally in the sun.

Key is not to spin and get them straight on to the cushions to reduce the shrinkage.

Otherwise find someone who can steam clean it.

Our local commercial laundry used to be very good for things like sofa covers.

If the covers are not removable, then cleaning can be hard. If the spills have got into the foam and other padding, it's difficult to dry.
A friend's daughter does upholstery, it might be worth asking such a person if they can remove the covers and get them cleaned, if they are not DIY removable.

Otherwise, go to Ikea or somewhere and get a sofa with washable covers!
No need to spend thousands.

Get a vax with a hand attachment, cheap as chips.

Or hire one from the local supermarket.

Vax attachment works OK if its just the upholstery that needs sorting.

If the covers come off & you can wash the cushions that would help, good soak in a large tub of water + oxy powder will remove all sorts but it *will* take a lot of rinsing to get clean and it *will* take ages to dry through.

1. Buy some removable covers, fit them and try to forget what's underneath.

2. Scrub the stinky cushions with some form of soapy bubble at a fairly concentrated dilution, then attack them with a pressure washer; rinse and repeat until the black ooze stops oozing blackly. Place inside a bin bag, sandwich between two pieces of plywood and drive onto it to squish as much water out, then air dry.

Then after a week, it will be really minging, and you can go to ikea...

We have a vax spotwash. Does an ok job on the sofa. We got it because of the terrors and the random stains / food dropping they do on all the furniture.

Could just hire a wet vac as well.

We initially hired the below, but used the upholstery detergent and the stair tool, but figured with the terrors, we d soon need to hire again, so just brought one.

I don’t understand how the terrors generate so much filth.

Have a look on FB Marketplace. Yes there is lot's of dross but there's also decent stuff for not much money - people who are moving or re-decorating or just want a change. There's stuff that's barely been sat on along with the minging dross.

This. Far superior equipment to the rug doctor/bosses type machines.
