And if so, what's it like?

(apart from dusty).

Not quite what you're after, but it will give you a flavour of parts of Mauritania: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAeZ-HSFdTw

I’ve been twice.

It’s not somewhere I would go to on holiday and I’ll caveat that by saying I’ve worked across much of Africa (typing this from Sierra Leone) and also fond of illogical holiday choices.

There’s simply nothing there. Emptiness is available elsewhere with the option of having at least a few days of the holiday where there is something to do.

I have been to Dakhla in the Western Saraha. A bit bleak and lots of military presence but quite a cool vibe and very french (if you like watersports).

No idea why you would want to visit Mauritania though.

Travelled through Nouakchott a few times when working on the Western Sahara coast. Bleak is a good description.

This reminds me of an odd chap I once worked with who'd spent a lot of time learning useless trivia and would attempt to "win" any argument by saying "yes, but can you name the capital of Mauritania?" to show how clever he was, regardless of how irrelevant this was to the the subject being discussed.

similarly i had a colleague who was made up that we were going to ougadougou as it was one of those random bits of trivia you read once and never forget, his link to it being a book he read in primary school.

tbf ouga was a pretty decent night out.

A mate has asked if I want to ride the iron ore train later in the year with him. I’ve so far managed to excuse myself from it, this thread further cements my desire to go somewhere with a little more to offer than pneumoconiosis

Spent a few weeks in NKT for work before sailing out of the port, its bleak, dusty and very little to see, also dry so you cant get a beer (you can but its not worth it) the mosquitos are brutal. One of the local guys I worked with stated its a bit of a hot spot for illegal contraband coming in from south and north america..... explained the amount of G wagons being ripped around the town on no plates....
