Hi there,

I am about to take delivery of a used car tomorrow and am in the process of VT’ing my Audi which they tell me will take 3 weeks or so for the car to be collected. Seems awfully long but that’s just how it is I guess after calling them to ask.

The Audi’s insurance had to be renewed last month and its currently with Axa and is paid monthly. The issue I have is the dealer I am buying my new car from couldn’t hold the car for 3 weeks until the Audi is gone which is fair enough. Hence I have the new car arriving now, but, I can see from looking on Axa’s website that if I cancel the Audi’s insurance I am liable for the whole year. I cant replace the Audi with the new car now as then the Audi is uninsured and it needs to be insured as part of the VT process - taxed, valid MOT and insurance.

So am a little stuck on how best to tackle this! Has anyone been in this position of an awkward car crossover with one going back and one going and what they did? I am not sure if a months temporary insurance is potentially possible? I guess that would be on the new car and then once the Audi has gone I then do the normal thing and switch the Axa policy onto the new car as most of us normally do.

Any advice would be hugely appreciated! smile

I spoke to my insurers when I had a similar issue. They covered both cars during the crossover period. Was not too expensive.

I was similar with Direct Line. Lease outgoing Q5 cost about £24 for the last three weeks on a new temp policy whilst my existing policy was transferred to my new car.

TBF to direct line I called up, spoke to a real person and they made sorting it out way easier and cheaper than I thought it would be.

Thank you SO much for helping me so quickly!! I really do appreciate it!

Since posting this I have found temporary insurers but its around the £250 mark for a month and they either don’t have windscreen cover or business use and I need both!

That’s a huge relief that the existing insurer is the way to go on this! If it has to be temporary so be it but £250’s a lot when the car for the whole year will be around £550!

Thank you very, very much and will give Axa a call first thing! smile
