Sure there have been plenty of passengers who have had that hit then of the legs over the years.

It looks like a break out box. Does the same as back probing the ECU pins without risking dammage to the connector or getting a short.
A good thing to knock up if you have a duff old ECU, a connector and access to an electronics parts store where the storeman can look the other way.

Are you my boss? It is a breakout box, with added simulators for coolant temp sensor and throttle pot (the two most likely bits to fail).
LEDs show supply and cranking status, bank firing status plus the kill switch in the AFM.
Allows measurements of injector current drain, all voltages from throttle pot, air flow meter, air and coolant temp sensors, whether or not the engine is running.
Also allows the injectors to be individually switched on or off (to prove whether they or the spark plugs are duff) and fired manually, which in collaboration with a pressure gauge on the fuel rail confirms whether the injectors are actually delivering any fuel.
Yes, Dicky, it does work. I was so busy watching the meter and oscilloscope that I was almost taken out by a 10-ton curtainsider
No, Mick; it doesn't allow adjustment of the ECU as such though it does allow you to see the effect of any alterations (and the throttle pot and temp sensor can be ruled in or out in seconds when fault-finding).
Currently on the bench is an ECU which is having a few external controls added...

Using an old ECU case was easiest as the difficult bit (the chassis connector) is already done for you.
The front panel (a bit bling, sorry
) is actually gold-effect card with the labelling done in AutoCAD; it was first printed on white paper as a drilling template. Shame I got one legend wrong and forgot one of the most important connectors... doh.

Some time back I did consider having something similar so that you could see at a glance if the injectors were firing... a pair of LEDS fed via 470 Ohm resistors from 12v, with the other ends of the LEDs going to the appropriate pins on the ECU would do it.
Then I got carried away...
On the contrary - respect is due, and I am frankly very envious that I can't tinker with my car the same way you boys can (having spent many happy years under the bonnet of various cars pulling SU carbs to bits.)
I grew up in Blackpool in the 80s worshipping the wedge as their drivers gave them shakedowns past my parents' house.
I was just interested and being friendly.......

I'm not having any go as you say , just amazed that modern 996 owners take a look at us lot .Do you mind me asking wether you get many oily problems with your car ? You are very welcome on this site by the way , why don't you get one of us to give you a run in a noisy wedge ,I'm sure someone near you will oblige !
