Thats about the one reason I'd fancy an electric car. You can get some with a dog mode, where the aircon stays on and keeps it nice and cool while youve nipped in somewhere.

That's a smart idea whether you've got a dog or not

It is, and works well, but passers-by are likely to try and break-in to “save” the dog. My younger brother has a Tesla which has a dog-mode and displays a message on the screen saying the car is air conditioned and the dog is at a comfortable temperature. He’s still had people ranting at him about leaving his dog in the car while he’s gone into the shop for something.

I've been nervous about leaving the dog in the car because there seems to be more and more morons that just want an excuse to be a hero. My car doesn't display the internal temperature in foot high numbers.

Similarly with walking a dog in anything over about 18 degrees these days.

While I agree with the overall sentiment, I don't think the hyperbole helps:

The article said:
"A car can become as hot as an oven, even when the weather doesn't feel that warm," warned Carrie Stones from the RSPCA.

She added that a car could reach 47C within an hour while the weather outside it was at 22C.
My oven doesn't go as low as 47°C. And 40°C is too hot for a dog.

Would anyone outside the car be able to tell if the aircon was on?

My wife car you can hear it (maybe not in a busy car park)

If I was leaving a dog with the ac on I would probably leave it in the boot where it usually sits

Of course I wouldn’t do it for long in case something went wrong

Guess you could leave a note on the dash board advising any would be hero passerby's that the AC is on for the dog and they aren't in distress.

No, but people should be able to tell the difference between a dog that is perfectly comfortable and calm and one that is in distress and panting like hell to try to cool down.

In a Tesla its displayed (in big numbers) on the dash when in that mode. Would be sensible in any car that has a similar mode.

In most of these cases I don't think that's what we're talking about is it?

It's muppets leaving their dogs or sometimes even kids in baking hot cars with no cooling.
