I m after a used Honda e, early one around £14k or so

Thought I d look at a few Honda approved used ones, as they must be better than the rest eh?

Car 1 - yellow with low miles, pics looked good. Shame something or someone has pissed on the back seat. Salesman couldn t smell it, with 30c temps it was pretty obvious. Also had brand new tyres on the back, by Triangle

Car 2 - same dealer as above, blue with low miles. Whole right hand side has been repainted, looks like rattle can. Dealer says are you sure, looks ok to me

Car 3 - another Honda dealer, grey one with very low miles. Instantly could see the black panel at the back had been hit, it was crumpled like hell. Wheels had all been painted very badly. All 4 tyres were by Triangle. Shame as the car was nice otherwise, but the dealer basically said take it or leave it. Also, the 225 tyres were on the right, the 205 tyres were on the left. Wtf

All 3 cars were dirty.

I know im picky but jeez

Local independent where I test drove a black one last week, car was far nicer and I didn t buy it as they offered me peanuts for my trade in, but I ve since got what I want from WBAC so might just go back there.

I think you have answered your own question.
I wouldnt let wrong tyres put you off if the rest of the car is right.
Tyres can be replaced easily enough.

I'm reminded of the poster who bought an approved used turbo Civic, which then blew up, and when it turned out to have been remapped by the previous owner, got absolutely sthoused by the dealer.

I don't disagree, but they indicate the car has been owned by an idiot who didn't take care of it.

Or a dealer putting cheap new tyres on as the old ones were worn to make as much profit as possible on the sale.
Most dealers will be looking to make £1000-£1500 out of a standard secondhand car sale.
So depending on trade in price will depend on how much money is in the pot for prep to get it to a saleable standard.

Did we ever get a resolution for that one? The thread disappeared a long time ago.

Triangle tyres are the cheapest ones available on Stapletons, which is where every dealer in the network I used to work for bought the tyres in from.

Be interesting to know what the difference between the WBAC price and what these cars were up for.

Where would you buy from?

Private sales all seem to be Cat N/S cars or people wanting retail prices as they dont want to accept the price offered by WBAC, Motorway, Carwow etc. At least with a dealer you have some legal rights.

I second your question. I'm also looking at approved used Honda's at the moment and have noticed that their stock is 1500-2000 pounds more expensive that similar stuff on AT. The other cars available are at the big supermarkets; carworld, bigmotoringworld etc and they have terrible reviews.

There are fewer cars privately available, than I was expecting.

You just have to buy on condition no matter if it's AUC/Independent/Private, be as picky as you like there are enough of them out there to find the right one for you.

As for the tyres that's just standard main dealer fodder, you could include a better tyres in the deal when you're negotiating,

It’s in the maybe pile, I’m looking at a private sale one tomorrow

Took us months to find a decent approved used Golf.

The utter st dealers have on their used lots is quite frankly, alarming.

I dunno if it’s down to the low availability of used stock out there or dealers just fancy their chances with any old crap.

We are now back in the market for an estate for the dogs and finding ourselves in exactly the same fking position regardless of budget.

More money just brings more expensive st.

It is seriously soul destroying.

I think one of the other issues is dealers are not prepping stuff now until it's sold. It used to be the procedure at the dealer I was at (12 years ago, mind) that cars could not be put on the forecourt until they'd had a mechanical and cosmetic prep.

I partially get it, as you don't necessarily want to sink hundreds into a car that may go over age and you trade out of, but it doesn't give a good impression to customers.

At the time we looked at a VRS estate and the rear inner door card was badly scratched.

Salesman told us that this would be picked up in their approved used check and be replaced (amongst other issues)

Arrived to collect and the damaged door card hadn’t been replaced and I was told the sales manager wouldn’t authorise the replacement as if would cost nearly £1k.

I literally told him was talking st and asked for the deposit back, which they eventually agreed to.

Four months later, car was still on the forecourt at 3k less and at a guess eventually sold.

I've said here before that that Approved Used is meaningless marketing guff to get dumb and naive people in through the door to con them into buying their crap in the belief that the vehicles are all top quality, well-looked after and fault-free, providing many years of trouble-free motoring. The reality is it just the same crap bought from the auctions that every other backstreet trader uses and all they do is give the tyres a whizz round with some tyre foam and then fill the windscreen with massive APPROVED USED boards and lies about how it's just had a 200 point check and then put the price £2k more than everything else on AT. sit back and wait for an old couple with no clue about cars to walk onto the forecourt.

Approved used was actually worth paying for years ago and still is to certain extent with the better warranties they come with at the time of purchase.

I'm looking at Honda E's as well - went to look at one today, looked decent enough, few scratches which could polish out, but like all commuter cars, many have been abused and unloved then ditched at the end of the lease.

However, there are some terrible ones out there - there's one at Honda Wolverhampton with a *massive* stain across the back seat along with close-ups of the switchgear which are filthy biglaugh shocking from a main dealer.
