Hi guys

Does anyone have any experienced of a nice holiday in France in October time that would work well for a drive, with three kids in tow? I don’t fancy getting on a plane with my 3, have recently acquired a new car I’m keen to take on a run (Q7) and bloody love France. Kids are newborn, 2 and 5 and just need somewhere near a pool and nothing a great deal more except perhaps not too far to drive….. any thoughts very welcome please!

October would mean that you need to be in the south for lounging around a pool.

School holidays in France this autumn (Toussaint) run from 18 Oct to 2 Nov, so options during this time will be more expensive.

Northern France in October is similar weather to south UK, so unless you head to the south of France, pool options will probably be limited to inside pools. Still plenty of options though. We’ve been here and generally good for families. It’s open till November.

Also quite near for a visit to Disney.

There are many other similar places.

Bordeaux is still just warm enough if you’re lucky. Last year it was perfect, as was Lacanau.

It s brilliant. Northern France. Love it. But it s closed in October, which may be an issue for a lot of what you want.

October won t be warm. You may have to look at Airbnb?

But absolutely keep this place on your radar for future summer holidays.

If I wanted somewhere to take 3 young kids for a pool based type of break I'm not sure Northern France would be my choice - very unlikely to be warm enough.

If you want somewhere warm enough for a pool-based holiday in late October, you need to be looking almost to the South coast, or at least somewhere like Avignon/Orange/Carcassone/Biarritz - none of which are a short drive!

We often go in the first week in November for my birthday and can vouch that anywhere North of the Loire can be chilly. Also remember that some of the storms which come in from the Atlantic to the West coast at that time of the year can be quite savage too!

The only part of (European) France that is not chilly in October is Corsica, and even there you can have some pretty fruity storms at that time of year, DAMHIK. And it’s two days drive from a channel port just to get on the ferry.

My French weekend house is 700km south of Calais in SE Burgundy, and we generally stop eating lunch/dinner outside from early October onwards. I think your pool will need to be an indoor one if you want a French October holiday and not have to drive too far from the UK.

Lots of sound advice in this thread. Our holiday home is in the Loire, near Tours. While we've had some great October trips out, in terms of weather, it is very much a lottery. As someone said, northern French weather is generally like southern England with a few more degrees tagged on.

My advice? Fly to the Canaries.

Thanks all. I’m not too fussed about weather really- drizzly cold France beats the same in the uk as far as I’m concerned!
